| Loose adult tooth So we just found a loose front tooth in Sophie's mouth. We call this tooth her mutant tooth because two grew in one spot and we had been trying to keep up with keeping it clean, but she has never been one to let us near her mouth. We were playing with her last night and saw that the mutant tooth was loose so I guess that is a sign for a dental. Her teeth also have quite a bit of tartar on them. She has an appointment tomorrow at 12:30pm to see the vet about it and ask what their opinion is. Honestly, we can't afford this right now after dealing with all of her vet bills from April but I know it is dangerous for her to have potentially infected gums. I am terrified that once they get in there she will need more than just the loose tooth pulled and that is where it starts to get too expensive. I am scared to put her back under because of the risks. But I am trying to tell myself the risks outweigh the potential for poisoning her with her teeth. I have a random question though. One side of her beard always has more gunk on it than the other and it is the side with the loose tooth. Could her unwillingness to eat stem from the fact that her teeth are bothering her? She has been in and out of the vet and had test after test and haven't found a definitive answer about her issues, but in the last few months she has has a lot more days of not wanting to eat for the day than usual. We thought maybe the food the vet put her on was her problem, but could it be possible that her little mouth has off days? She turned 6 today! So Happy Birthday to her and her probably needing a dental! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Happy bday to your sweet girl !! Yes, absolutely she could be refusing food bc of tooth pain. I don't know if you've ever had true tooth pain, but it can be excruciating...so I'm glad you're taking her in. Once they get in there, if more teeth need to be pulled - I'd get them all yanked bc the charge per tooth usually isn't exorbitant, relatively speaking. And yes, the wetness on one side of her mouth could very likely be from that bad tooth and drooling from mouth pain.

| Thanks. I am hoping that her teeth are the problem and after all is said and done she is back to herself. She is definitely acting normal usually but she has been in and out of the vet for not eating and I guess they never thought to look at her teeth? I am about to say something that is purely selfish and I will not deny treatment for this, but I really don't want her to have so many teeth pulled that her tongue hangs out. I am terrified they will have to take too many out and then her little tongue will hang out and I really don't want that! Selfish, I know..and if it is what is best for her she will get it whatever she needs, but cross fingers that doesn't happen! She is definitely a little hesitant to eat kibble, but she eats it after awhile. Our vet charges $20-$100 per tooth depending on its condition and the tooth and the dental starts at $450. I don't want to look for cheaper places because she has had her knees done there and I trust their anesthetic process, I know risks are still there but at least I know they have had her under twice in the last 2 years without a problem. She had blood work and and ultrasound in April, so at least I can take comfort in that as well. Here is a cute picture I just took of her. She usually gets a birthday cake but with her belly issues and mysterious random inappetence we have stopped giving her new things. So her "cake" was chunks of frozen banana, frozen green beans, some peas, a couple blueberries and some kibble. She didn't get to eat all of it, I just needed enough to make the bowl not look so empty! |

| Which tooth is it? Teddy had a loose tooth and it came out on its own.

| I know nothing about teeth but I will try. So one of her lower canines only grew in half way, and then another tooth grew in front of that half grown in canine. The "mutant tooth" is the one in front of the canine and the gums look like they are receding around it. They pulled some teeth when she was spayed as a puppy, but this happened after her adult teeth grew in. I really would love for it to fall out on its own, but it isn't used for anything and she won't chew on that side right now. She is still acting normal but not okay with me near her mouth. I hope it is her only problem tooth, but I am thinking based on drool and not always wanting to eat with no known cause, a dental will need to happen regardless. |

| That tooth isn't one that will fall out. It should be removed by a vet. I was hoping you'd say a tiny little tooth. I think the dental price sounds reasonable. Who cares if her tongue hangs out. My Teddy sticks his tongue out where his teeth were removed and he looks adorable. It's better for her long term health to just have the dental done.

| Happy Birthday Little Doll Baby!!! She is so Sweet! My Teddy Bear is having a dental next month and some of front teeth are loose. I don't know how many teeth he will need to have pulled but I think a few. I hope not too many because he prefers to eat kibble over canned food. Good luck.

| I have a little rescue toy poodle with only three teeth in his whole mouth. Luckily the three he has left are canines. Vet left them to hold his tongue in his mouth. And it never hangs out! LOL Diana |

| Update since being to the vet. Sophie has been scheduled to have her dental done next week on Tuesday. Slightly concerned since the next day is a holiday for us, but the vet assured me it would be fine to be done the day before a holiday closure. She will definitely have her mutant tooth out and possibly a few front teeth as well. She will be getting x-rays done when she is under to check for any problems as well. We were given an estimate of between $523.70 and $687.70 - depends on how many teeth/any other problems they may come across while she is under. We drop her off on Monday night and they will be running the normal pre surgical blood work (her liver and kidneys) to make sure she can handle the anesthetic. To save some money she said she wouldn't suggest the full panel at this time since she had two full panels done in the last 3 months but they just want to double check those levels before putting her under. I am so nervous for her to be put under, but she definitely needs some love on her teeth, so I am just crossing my fingers she does well! Quote:
LOL my parents had a 19 year old toy poodle that had lost most of her teeth as well...which was somewhat helpful to my brother and I since we were still pretty young and she was deaf and blind so it was easy to startle her and she would often snap at us.

| Hoping the dental goes great! Mikki was refusing to eat and I took her to the vet. And guess what he found? A loose tooth so that can be why she's not eating! Once she had her dental, she lost four more teeth. Her tongue don't hang out and she has adjusted just fine. Sending prayers the dental goes smoothly!

Sophie had her dental today and did well! She was finished around 2pm and home by 7pm. She only ended up needing two teeth pulled - the mutant one and a back one that the top had broken off off. The vet said her x-rays showed that she had another tooth break off and the gum healed over it and said there was no sign of infection so they decided to just leave it as it is probably not bothering her. I wasn't listening perfectly when she was explaining it so I don't remember what she actually said but she said something about it floating and could have been causing her sensitivity with cold. Whatever it was is more commonly seen in cats - she goes back next week for a follow up and I will find out the proper wording when I am there! It is now 1am and she seems to be doing well. She already wanted a spoonful of her canned food around 9pm and I am going to give her a little more soon since she is bugging me for food and the vet said if she is hungry that she is allowed to eat. She is just on her usual dose of Metacam for any pain she may feel. She was raspy and whiny all night until my husband got home and then finally went pee and now she is running around and her voice has finally returned (perfect timing...1am and in a hollow apartment building!). Her teeth look so good and I hope we can at least slow down the progress with proper care. The vet said small dogs can have bad teeth no matter how diligent the care is, so they can only hope to slow it down. I hope she still feels good in the morning and has an appetite, but I am just happy she is doing better as the night goes on! I hate putting her under for anything but seeing the before and afters, I am so glad we got it done - even if this isn't the reason she has been back and forth with not eating, I am sure her mouth will feel better without a broken tooth and a rotting tooth.
