| What Causes these Symptoms? Please Help! A friend of mine has a Miniature Daschund who has been quite ill for about a month. The symptoms are bloated stomach, loss of appetite, seizures, hiding from people, vomiting and diarrhea, staggering when walking. The dog is only 8 years old. The dog went to the vet. They ran various tests, discovered the dog had a certain type of enzyme and a low albumin count. My friend doesn't want to do a biopsy because it's too invasive on a small dog, but I'm wondering if anyone has heard of these symptoms. Could it be cancer? Please help!! | My previous yorkie Prancer passed away from cancer. It was the worst thing in the world to have to go through. He kept vomitting up a clear mucus just about everyday and then following that he would have diarrhea. We took him to the vet and at first they thought it was pancreatitis but after doing some tests they discovered a thick linining around his organs and thought it could be cancer but werent sure. After hearing this we were beside are selfs and just wanted to take him home. He was so weak when we went to pick him up and you could feel his bones which was very upsetting for us. At first he was so happy to see us and he still had an IV in him from the vets b/c he wasnt eating but once that wore off he was not eating or drinking anything and just layed there. SO we were basically up against a brick wall, ethier put him down now, or do a biopsy to see if it is cancer and if it is put him down right there because letting him starve him self to death was not an option for us. So we decided to have the biopsy done and just to make sure it was cancer and that we did everything we could to save him. So the first thing they did was a chest x-ray and there was nothing in his lungs so that was a good sign. So we gave kisses and said are goodbyes still hoping in my mind that this wouldnt be the last time I saw him. SO we waited for the call and they said it was cancer and had spread to just about all of his organs and since he was already under anethisa we just decided to put him down right then and we had him cremated. I still miss him terribly and cannot believe cancer took him, I always thought I would of just found him gone in his sleep. But I know he is lookin down on my from rainbow bridge and I will see him again. Heres one of the last pictures we took of him, the night before he passed. I love you Prancer! I would def. have your friend get her dog checked out for possible cancer and if it is hopefully it can be caught early enough to save them. I wish her the best of luck with everything. |

| my golden retreiver died of cancer recently. She was vomiting, had diareah, loss of apaetite, she lost a whole bunch of weight, ans because she was so weak she sort of staggered around a little. We knew it was cancer because we were able to see it, but the cancer wasnt what killed her. The cancer messed with her immune system and because of this she was suseptible to sooo many viruses. She died of canine distemper, we know it was this because of the type of seizures she was having. I hope everything turns out all right, i cant deffinatly say for sure that this is what it is because i am not a doctor, but these were also my babies symptoms as well........ we managed to keep her alive for at least a couple months using brown rice and fried egg for food. This is relatively unheard of for cd, usuall dogs that have cd die within a couple weeks |

| Not to scare you but the symptons look like a poision.. Is there any walnuts ,nuts or acorns of any kind that would be moldy from winter? Tilly use to bring walnuts in the house and I knew she couldn't eat them so I didn't think to much about it until I saw the symptons you mentioned! minus a couple of symptons, I rushed her to the vet and they pumped her stomach and said black mold on any nut, leaf that has the mold can kill a small dog!! Please have your friend check and see if his pet has any walnuts etc.. around |

| ^ I think the symptoms have been going on for about a month now. Wouldn't the poison have gone through the dog's system by now? |

| I'm so sorry for everyone's loss. Your posts brought tears to my eyes. I really hope her dog doesn't have cancer and that it is something less complicated like food poisoning. Last edited by Junebug; 03-16-2005 at 11:06 PM. |

| I'm so sorry to hear of your friend's Miniature Daschund. I did a little bit of searching, was he exposed to seomthing in the grass outside possibly?... Flea Treatment Poisoning Most pesticide chemicals in commercial flea repellents are fat-soluble and are stored in the fatty tissues of the body, primarily in the liver and in the nervous system. As these chemicals accumulate over time, they negatively affect nerves, hormones, and immunity. Symptoms to lookout for include anorexia, cancer, colic, convulsions, deformity of sexual organs, depression, diarrhea, foaming at the mouth, nausea, seizures, stiffness, vomiting and weakness, according to Anderson and Peiper. Pyrethrum, a nontoxic insecticide made from chrysanthemum flowers, is found in may flea repellant products and is considered safe in its natural state. However, combine pyrethrum with chemical additives and you have a potentially dangerous environment for your dog. Chemical additives to look out for include diethyl toluamide (DEET), propoxur, diazinon, carbaryl, dichlorvos, and DDVP. Be forewarned: constant inhalation of DDVP, found in flea collars, can causepermanent damage to your dog's internal organs. http://www.twodogpress.com/twodogpress/healthy.html |

| junebug ... so sorry about your friends Dashound. Wish I had a suggestion. Maybe they will find out what it is and can treat it. Meantime, we will keep the baby in our prayers. Please keep up updated.

| She needs to take it to the vet and let them look at it, but it almost sounds like renal failure. the toxins that your kidneys do not filter get in your blood stream and make them very sick and weak. eventualy not eating and dehydrate. That could be a posibility but he should be taken to the vet as soon as possible. I'll say a prayer poor little feller |
