| Question about CT Hello All, My wife and I found out that our 12 year old Yorki has a collapsed trachea and an enlarged spleen. When he coughs his back siezes up and he basically collapses and after 2 or 3 seconds gets right back up. Our vet started us on theopyline but that seemed to make him worse and now they gave us hydrocodone to try. Does anyone have experience with this medication? Right now he takes the medicine and just wants to sleep and barely move. He also has no appetite.... Just curious if anyone has a similar experience... |

| I have had a few pups with CT with varying symptoms. What I have found out is the trial and error is the best way to deal with it. What works for one may not work for another. There are many different meds that your vet can try ... if you feel this medicine is knocking him out too much, call the vet and let him/her know. You should not have to keep making appointments if it is just for a med change. One interesting med that has worked for a couple of pups in the past is Lomotil (it is an anti diarrheal but works for CT in dogs sometimes).... it cannot be substituted with any other anti diarrheal. You might ask your vet about that. Here is a link with some other options: 01 Tracheal Collapse - VeterinaryPartner.com - a VIN company! I am assuming your vet probably discussed things with you such as keeping him relaxed, keeping his weight down, and not letting him overheat. Welcome to YT! Please keep us posted on your baby.

| Our dog who is almost 15 recently started treatment for CT. We started with 2-3 times a day Hycodan and did not find that it caused any drowsiness or problem with appetite. We also added Temiril P twice a day and that worked very well. Then he got pneumonia. Since his cough worsened, we were going to add a bronchodilator (considered the one your dog is on) but that was when we figured out he had pneumonia. My vets who are specialists in internal medicine and cardiology have told me that it is a matter of finding the right "cocktail" for each dog. Our dog is off all but hycodan twice a day now. I see you're in NY and probably have a similar climate to us here in New England. I've found that sleeping with the air conditioner on and a cool most humidifier on a medium setting (I have the Crane brand humidifier from Target) has really helped Barney. Other medicines we considered were steroid inhaled bronchodilator (Flovent), low doses of prednisone, or inhaled albuterol. I would make sure your dog has a three view thoracic X-ray done to rule out pneumonia if this has not been done (standard thoracic X-rays are two view). I would ask if you can get a radiology read on it. Our dog had a very mild scatter of pneumonia, his lungs sounded clear to specialists so it was really surprising but an easy fix. Also, I've elevated Barney's bowls and this takes stress off the trachea for him. Good luck, I hope you find a good mix for him. |

| Thanks you for your response. The Vet said to give it a day or 2 to let the medicine works since it's the first time he is taking anything this strong. His appetite seems to be coming back a little bit more today. He is walking a little better today. So i guess it's a wait and see. |
