| Catnip Safe for Dogs? Hope this question isn't considered to be too stupid.. But is catnip safe for dogs? Bc Harley has adopted.. rather stolen.. my cat Demons catnip filled/stuffed toy and takes it with him everywhere.. I really like that he loves it so much bc he always has it in his mouth he never has any free time to skim the house and do his vaccume act.. Meaning he's to busy playing with this toy.. for HOURS AND HOURS AND HOURS to even remember that he likes gulping weird random objects.. Which is awesome! But I just wanted to be sure that it was safe for him. Thanks for any info!

| I think he likes it's minty scent and flavor.. it only smells minty after he's licked and chewed all over it.

| Kahlua has stolen our cat's catnip toy as well. He loves it. He will just run around the house with it in his mouth and wont allow the cat a turn with it. We are curious as well if catnip is safe for dogs. The catnip is secured inside the toy and there is no way that he could rip into they toy to get to the pouch of catnip. This is one of his favorite toys, I'd hate to take it away.

| Several years ago our dalmation got hold of a catnip 'tail'. She chewed it. Her mouth muscles/skin would not close for almost a week. She drooled profusely and ended up raw over about 1/3 of her body due to the drool. She never seemed 'drunk' and we had no clue it was the catnip until after several hundred in vet bills, then we realized the 'tail' was missing. Found it in her bedding. The vet said this was a typical reaction. |

| I have seen catnip in a burlap bag. Mabe something that is durable would be safer to chew on since he loves it so much.

| I called my vet before I brought Jeter home from the breeder about this very subject. I have 2 Scottish Folds and a house full of cat toys, many with catnip. The vet told me not to worry about the toys. He felt that the amount of catnip in the toys is small enough and they are not eating it. Even if one did break open, the contents is small enough that it wouldnt harm him. |

| Goldcupmom's experience with her poor dalmation worries me a lot.. But harley has been playing with these toys for a few weeks now and I have not seen any bad reactions at all.. yet.. I'm going to keep my eye on him as always.. Maybe the reaction to the catnip only affects some dogs, but not all.. I don't know. I haven't asked my vet yet. He never gets 'drunk' after playing with it but he and the cat are surely hillarious bc he just prances around him with it in his mouth and will toss it across the floor just to make the cat chase after it then steal it from him again!

| Catnip is not harmful for a dog. A lot of dogs, like some cats, have little interest in it anyway. Of course, you don't want your pup eating a bowl full of catnip (or your cat either), but playing with a toy like yours is doing is perfectly harmless. I have had catnip toys around my house forever - mostly for the cats, but from time to time, my dogs have decided they wanted to play with them and have hauled them around too. Too much catnip does make animals "drunk" or "high" --- or whatever you want to call it. So, for this reason, you obviously don't want them to "overdose." Right? Carol Jean |

| Thanks for all the information. I always wondered as well. Daisy loves to play with the plastic grocery bags, she likes the noise. Cats have alot of "crackle" toys so i picked up Daisy a few and she plays with them. I always inspect and so far so good - no openings. |

| I have been wondering the same thing myself. My cat has no interest in them but Baxter sure does. He will carry it every where with him. I also inspect mine for any tears in the toy. Haven't seen him "drunk" yet.

| I have one cat that is absolutely crazy about catnip. When I say they get drunk - this really isn't the right term. My cat goes "wild' playing and running all over the place....for 10 or 15 minutes. I agree - that a little catnip won't hurt a dog. As I said, my dogs have been around it and have played with it for years (the cat's toys). And, I agree with the post that mentioned that there just isn't enough in these toys to hurt most cats or dogs. Don't know what to think about the dalmatian -- that is weird! What is a "catnip tail?" Maybe it's the amount or the form of catnip that the dalmatian ate that caused the problem. Carol Jean |

| Our yorkie Cooper, who is almost 2 years old, decided the cats new catnip toy was his when we opened presents on Christmas. Before we could get between him and the cat he had already tore open the catnip toy, spilled it all over the carpet and tried to eat what was left of the toy. We have no idea how much he consumed or how much he sniffed of the catnip. He and the cat kept sniffing the carpet where it was spilled- after it was vacuumed up. Since then he has not eaten much and has been very quiet, which is not the norm for him. Do I need to take him to the vet?
