| Has this ever happened to anyone? I am so upset right now- My 8 year old yorkie has always been pretty healthy and when he is under the weather I know it. Well, a couple of weeks ago I broke my foot, and am virtually under house arrest for 6 weeks. A friend came over on Wednesday to bring me some food and snacks and she brought Sargie some duck treats/ She has a lhasa and I am sure she has fed the treats to her dog = she told me they are made in USA from some natural store (I asked after what happened). I mention this but don't think this is the cause... I have no idea why but wednesday night Sargie got very restless (usually when he is ill he gets lethargic and won't eat - not the case). He kept moving all night and started scratching and biting his paws. On Thursday he seemed pretty normal but didn't want his favorite treat. He did eat dinner however. On Friday I thought he was getting over it (pr that it was my imagination). He seemed quite normal and happy.(refused treat again tho). Then without warning he ran into the driveway and had horrible "red raspberry" diahrrea and vomited mucus with flecks of blood. We went immediately to vet.The vet gave him fluids and gave us an antibiotic and an appt for this morning and sent fecal sample for tests.Dog had a fever. He vomited again and got very lethargic and I stayed up most of the night; then at about 5 Am he got restless with the scratching and rubbing his chin on the bed. His teeth are bad and an issue and the vet said they may be the cause? at vets this morning his fever was gone, he was drinking lots of water and keeping it down, he gave him more fluids. No more vomiting. Had diahrrea this am but was tarry, which vet said was actually an improvement from the bloody mucus. All tests were negative for parasites and parvo. also said it isn't HGE.Vet thinks it is a virus, the teeth or something he ate. He is eating now (wouldn't take the Ensure so vet said give him a bit of his regular food which he wolfed down). My concern is that he is still scratching and rubbing his head like crazy, actually shedding hair. Then he is quiet for awhile, although breathing quickly. Then the scratching starts again. He sees the vet again Monday. Vet said he can't do anything for scratching now because he is on antibiotic and recuperating. He thinks his bad teeth are involved. I am frightened that the bleeding will start again since this is how it began. Any ideas? Monday is a long way away! O'm hoping the lack of vomiting and diahrrea and his eating and drinking is a positive sign and I trust my vet biy he id obviously uncomfortablr with this scratching and head rubbing. n |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Wow, how scary to have all these odd symptoms! So, pancreatitis was ruled out? It's fairly common in yorkies, relatively speaking. As far as the itching etc, that's very strange. I'm not sure why the vet won't give a steroid to relieve symptoms....? I would ask about that.

| Thats scary…I really do hope you can find out whats wrong tomorrow am. Maybe you can rub organic virgin coconut oil on the areas that are bothering him. It won't hurt if he licks it, and may give some comfort to the itchiness. I have read that my go to method for humans, is the worst thing to use on dogs..oatmeal bath. Apparantly it reacts totally differently on dogs and may cause more itchiness. Best wishes..sending prayers |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | So sorry to read this, I would be suspicious of the treat since it happen the same night he ate the treat. Perhaps, the condition of his teeth may have left him more susceptible a bacterial infection? Anyway, I wouldn't give that treat again. I hope you can get a tooth cleaning and have the vet remove those teeth, bad teeth can really have an impact health wise. Sending good thoughts and prayers your way.

| hanging in there Thanks for your kind replies. I read about coconut oil somewhere (but someone also suggested oatmeal baths!) Trouble is with my broken foot I am unable to go coconut oil shopping! I wonder too if it is not really itching him - it is a reaction to pain or something else. He scratches in different areas (usually chin and shoulder or flank) randomly. I spent another night holding Sargie so he wouldn't keep licking and scratching. If I massaged his chest, or then even just held him pressing against his chest lightly, he stopped - at least for a while. He finally did fall asleep, then woke me having what I assume were dry heaves (no vomit). He has kept all antibiotic, food, water and ensure down and the scratching and licking as of this morning have decreased by about 90% (though occasionally he still does it for a moment). My concern now is that he is drinking way more than usual. The vet I believe thinks he is too weak for more medicine and does not want anything to cause a recurrence of the sloughing off of intestines. I checked the treats my friend gave him and they are all natural and made and sourced in the USA, so I feel better about that not being involved. Pancreatitis was never mentioned...in fact because of the horrible state of the fecal sample we brought in Friday afternoon that was all the vet had tested and he did not take a blood sample that day. He said he will do that Monday, but he was very optimistic seeing him yesterday after the bloody diahrrea. I guess I am just a natural worrier, but you know, we know our dogs, and I know that behavior signals something wrong. Right now he is curled up sleeping, very much his usual M.O. - I am hoping we have passed the worst of it?????!!!!! |

| I am sorry you are having to go through this with your poor baby....This is why I do not ever give mine any "doggie" treats....regardless of where they claim to be made or what they are made from. I stick with Honey Nut Cheerios, Fruit Loops, Teddy Grahams, vanilla wafers, Goldfish Crackers, animal cracker cookies,......strictly human edibles. I do give them Milk Bone dog biscuits (NOT the new teeth brushing kind) simply because they have been around as long as I have and they have not ever made any of my dogs sick. They may not be "fancy"organic treats, but they provide the "chewing on bones" action they all love. Reliable, dependable, standard old throw back Milk Bones and human cookies and crackers and cereal pieces. There have been a couple of occasions where I have tried all the fancy, new, organic, special, expensive treats, I have had issues with them....nothing serious, except when one of the treats splintered and almost strangled my pup....so I dont even go there anymore..... |

| treats I know - I always check where treats are from and usually he only gets Freshpet (from the fridge case), Blue Buffalo (when on sale!), Orijen, Stella and Chewy's - he is very fussy and will not eat biscuits or hard treats of any kind. Nor is he a chewer which is why his teeth are in such deplorable condition (he has already had several pulled over the years). My friend did give her dog these treats without issue and I do feel better about them but frankly I am surprised he even took it since it was a hard bone-line biscuit wrapped with sweet potato. I try not to give him human food as they say it's rich for them but I suppose cereal and crackers aren't like ice cream and steak. Of course he wouldn't eat those things unless he saw he eating them. He will not eat dry crackers etc. but if he sees me eating saltines, triscuits, a gold cupcake, light popcorn -then he HAS to have it because I am eating it. So he has eaten tiny pieces of those items. I just signed up for a dog food/treat recall list to come automatically to my mailbox. It is AMAZING how many are recalled - even premium brands. Very scary. |

| The symptoms keep evolving. The scratching and licking pretty much stopped and then the polydispia started and then the dry heaves. I called the vet but he said as long as he was eating a bit and drinking (even if a lot) and active it was all good news...said the dry heaves really made him think it was something he ate. At any rate he dropped a couple of stools late in the day which really were stools (soft but shaped) and I saw no blood of any kind. Hopefully this means he is on the mend. Keep him in your thoughts and thanks to all who offered their sympathies! |

| Were the duck treats in the form of a biscuit, or more like a jerky? If it were a jerky, he could have a piece stuck in between his teeth, which could explain the rubbing, scratching. Sorry you are having such a time with your foot and your little babe.

| Do you have someone who can walk him? I always find a good walk helps with stomach and bowel issues, too. Just a thought
