Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Article: Coconut Oil Vs. Fish Oil Awesome clarification on this subject, great article HERE. Coconut Oil Vs. Fish Oil Have you ever wondered whether you should feed your dog fish oil or coconut oil? The truth is that both oils have wonderful nutritional assets to offer your dog. Below are some facts about both oils that you need to know: Fish Oil **Fish oil is a long chain fatty acid, comprised of a chain of 18 carbon atoms Benefits **Fish oils primarily have an anti-inflammatory effect and may help against heart disease and cancer. EPA and DHA are converted into hormone-like substances called prostaglandins, which regulate cell activity and healthy cardiovascular function.Coconut Oil **Coconut oil is a medium-chain fatty acid, comprised of a chain of 12 carbon atomsBenefits **The lauric acid in coconut oil is converted into monoglyceride monolaurin by the body, which keeps animals from getting viral, bacterial or protozoal infections. Lauric acid is also found in abundance in breast milk so it has similar nutriceutical effects.

| Great info. I like both, but I have to admit that I am coconut oil crazy right now. Love it for myself and the doggies.

| Great article. I am also coconut oil crazy now too, for myself, and will have to include it for the pupsters. I never found a fish oil I could tolerate until about a year ago found better version, krill oil which is included in a joint health supplement I like.

| what type of fish oil/brand does everyone give their dogs? My Oliver is having heart issues and I really want to start him on a fish oil supplement. He also needs to put on some weight, would it help if I cooked his ground beef and food in coconut oil? |

| I put mine back on fish oil yesterday because his allergies cause him to itch. I put a dab of coconut oil on his tongue earlier and he loved it. I got the Rexall brand (fish oil, made in Deerfield Beach, FL) from Dollar General and the coconut oil is Simply Nature brand from Aldi (virgin, cold pressed, unrefined). Sam's Club sells a large jar of quality extra virgin coconut oil for around $17. Last edited by Cooper2010; 02-11-2015 at 11:50 AM. |
