| Heartworms in 1.5 year old Chorkie My 12-year-old Jack was stolen from my yard on a 15 minute potty break. We live in a quiet established neighborhood and someone stole him. For 12 years, he has gone out briefly in the morning and then I come out and walk him around some more and then bring him in for me to start to work. I am so heartbroken I can't stand it. Anyway, now I am looking for another Yorkie. But my finances are such that I cannot afford a Yorkie now. I did find a young chorkie at a shelter that has been treated for heartworms. This is what they said of the treatment: He was treated to get rid of the baby heartworms and to start killing the adults. The Heartguard monthly preventative in his case will do double duty of preventing new ones and wearing down the existing ones. This treatment is much easier on the dogs that the full treatment which takes 2 -3 months and requires keeping the dog very calm and still. The only standard of care I can find is that the dog receives 1 shot (which I think is what the chorkie has gotten) and then 30 days later, a shot, wait 24 hours, then another shot. The shelter is saying one shot and just use Heartguard to get rid of the rest. Is that new information that I just am not finding on the internet? I'm very nervous about that approach. I cannot afford financially nor emotionally to go through having a dog with heartworms. I would do the Heartguard regardless, so that's not a problem. Would you get this little Chorkie under these circumstances? |

| Sorry about your little Jack....they just had a bit on the news the other night, about the double/triple rise in stolen dogs, and then the majority of them ending up on Craigs List....dog flipping, it is called. If your dog was microchipped, you have a better chance of getting him back....hopefully, he was chipped. As for the heartworm treatment, I would get a second opinion on the treatment for heartworms. Is there a reason they dont want to give the baby the standardized treatment? I have never had a dog with heartworms....take that back, my significant other brought a stray home one time that was totally eaten up with them...he had them so bad, the vets said they could not treat him, all the dead worms released into his system/lungs/heart would kill him. I would ask a couple of vets about what the shelter is advising.....I honestly can not give you any useful advice other than that......hopefully, maybe LadyJane will come on with all her expertise in rescues, and shed some light on this for us. |

| I don't know what that shelter did, but it does not sound right. To read about heartworm treatment, read this link. As for heartgard killing the microfilaria (baby hearworms), that is correct. It will NOT kill the adults. ANyway...here: https://www.heartwormsociety.org/ Please be cautious....and my advice to you is to get insurance for any pup you adopt ... if you have money issues, you don't want to get caught up with a serious condition that you may not be able to afford. Good luck!

You would probably do well to start out with a healthy pup, rather than one with known issues that could easily end up costing you a ton of money to correct/treat. | |

| Thank you for the comments. I think if he has the real treatment (which I had read on Heartworm Society's website), I would probably get him. I'll definitely check out insurance before I commit. As far as Jack, he is microchipped. I reported him and they sent out alerts. I put out notices on FB for lost dog pages and local shelters. A good thing about the Home Again program, when I called my groomer to tell her to be on the lookout for Jack, she told me she had already received an alert by the HomeAgain program that he was missing. This made me feel like, yea - they really do what they say they are going to do, plus did not realize the alerts extend to groomers. What is really sad about this, is that he is old (12), neutered. So him being a prime "sellable" dog is low. I keep hoping they will bring him back, but if they steal so many, they may not remember where he came from, especially now a month later. |

| Thank you, ladyjane. I do keep up hope. If you Google, you can find a story of a dog missing for 8 years and returned because of a microchip! |
