| Gravy??? Hi all Smudger has been home with us for 7 weeks now (wow that's gone fast) and he has been great with his food. At first he was on purina pro plan which was expensive £14.99 for a bag. Then whn we went to the vet he gave us a free bag of food, he ate both of these no problem and had a very healthy appetite. Then we bought a new one purina ONE it's the same as the pro plan chicken and rice. He was fine on it for 2 days and then he wouldn't eat it. He gets 3 small meals breakfast, dinner and tea, but for the last 4 days his breakfast has stayed in is bowl all day. He would eat it eventually but it was a significant enough change for me to notice he wasn't eating as much. So I tried him on the one from the vet that he loved and it was the same story So I left it for 3 days I thought if I give in and give him something else which I'm not happy with (coz I really want him to have dry food) he will never go back to eating dry. But after 3 days he still wasn't eating.... And so today I made some gravy from human gravy granules and put 3 spoonfuls in his food and mixed it up. He ate the wholelot in 2 minutes flat. So my question is, Is it ok to give him this gravy?? I know it's not ideal. But he hasn't been the same this week coz he's not eating enough. Also has anyone elses dog had a sudden change of tastes and refused to eat their normal food?? WOW sorry it got kinda long Suppose I could have just said "Is it ok to give your dog our gravy???" lol

| Well about the whole gravy thing I have no idea but what I do know is my little Chloe was a very picky eater when we first brought her home and I was at the store everyday trying to find a food that she would eat but she wouldnt eat the dry food at all so I put her on Ceasers wet food and she just loves that. I have dry food down all day and I catch her every once in a while eating it too. So maybe try some kind of wet food and mix it with his dry food.

If you mix in the wet food or gravy, put only enough in there ( about a tablespoon per 1/2 cup ) to flavor it and not to be their main food. I know sometimes its necessary to get them to eat and I do it when I must but mostly I try to give very little wet food and I have minimal vet bills for teeth cleaning or removal. I have 7 dogs and will gladly show their mouth to anyone anytime and I do not brush their teeth. A good food and minimal treats should make them hungry enough that you do not have to resort to hiding what is GOOD for them.

I agree with you 100% I won't give my yorkie wet food ever ever. Only dry. My mums yorkie is 7 and she has very very bad teeth, she has actually lost 4 of hers and her breath smells bad and it's because of her diet. That is the reason I was so concerned about giving the gravy as I do realise that it isn't ideal, Smudger never gets any human food not just because of his teeth but also because I didn't want him to beg, so I was worried about giving it to him. Thanks for taking the time to reply

| Sometimes Loki picks at his food and I need him to eat, like before training class (So he won't be a monster and attack the treat bag because he's hungry!). I will put a couple of tsp of chicken stock on his food. I only use the good stuff since that's what I cook with and have around - the low sodium stock not the campbells type broth. This makes him want to eat. :-) You might regret giving gravy since it might cause tummy problems. This isn't always the best idea though, because if he's not eating it there might be a reason. Also, I just want to point out that none of those foods are really good foods. I know you said the vet gave you some but vets don't always have the best advice when it comes to foods. You need to read the ingredient list and find foods with 2-4 meats in the beginning of the ingredient list, no meat by-products, no artificial preservatives and no corn. Some suggestions are foods by Innova, California Natural, Canidae and Wellness. You can get these at Pet Supplies Plus, some feed stores and a lot of small independent pet stores. Just read the ingredients and you'll understand why he doesn't want to eat it Good luck!

| I dont see anything wrong with putting gravy on the food. They make that Iams gravy and I bet it has the same amount of fat. I think the most important thing is they eat their food.
