Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | Older Yorkie yelping My 13 year old yorkie, Bentley, has started yelping a lot when he is startled. He has always been timid and shakes, etc. when he is around the younger grandchildren. Since the cold weather has set in, he has started yelping when he is resting and we come up on him or touch him, even without the grandchildren. I am worried he is in pain. We know he has luxating patellas, Stage 4, but I am also worried that he is experiencing arthritis pain. If it continues or gets worse I plan on taking him to the vet, but I know I am not putting him through surgery at his age. I even worry about asking for pain medication. What should I do?

| With the cold weather I wouldn't be surprised if his joints are acting up. Another thing I thought about when reading your post was perhaps he is losing his vision. He doesn't see you coming up to him so he gets startled when you get close or pet him. It's sad seeing them like that when they get older, but it's just a part of life. Seems like you did a good job with him. 13 is pretty old for a yorkie. And I agree, I would not put him through surgery at that age.

| Poor boy. Have you tried talking to him before you approach him? I would work on finding a way to alert him comfortably so that he isn't startled. For arthritis, I would talk to your vet about pain meds, and look into heat and massage therapy that you can do at home. I have been reluctant to use meds, but I also don't want my doggies to suffer. Meds win out over suffering and we have not had any problems with them.

| My little girl started to loose her sight and hearing at 14 y/o. I didn't often leave her alone but when I did she would cry the entire time I was gone. She had never done that before. I found out from my neighbors about her crying. One day when I came home I ran into one of them, they told me everytime I leave her she cry's all day. Then one time I heard her, she was howling, LOUD. Poor little girl was scared. She could not see and was alone. This went on for 3 years, she had to be put down at 17 y/o. I agree, your baby may be loosing sight and hearing.

Donating Senior Yorkie Talker | Thank you Oh my goodness! Thank you so much for your comments. I really don't know what I will do if it comes to the point when I have to decide...I can't think about it. I know he is getting older, as we all are, but thinking of him not being in our lives is unthinkable. I know he is losing his hearing. His eyes clearly have cataracts. I just want to make him feel better.

| Since you mention cold, do you have him wear a sweater inside? Just a thought. Our old guy seems just a wee bit better while wearing a sweater indoors now that it has gotten colder. He's like 6" off the floor if he's standing. LOL Any draft at all and he's in the cold. I really should put a thermometer on the floor to see what temp he truly experiences. Just a thought. Wish him the best. |
