| Your dental care routine Hi everyone, I have been brushing Chloe's teeth every single day with CET Vanilla-Mint but recently I have noticed some yellow on her teeth. I'm really upset about this because I do brush EVERY day and I expected for her teeth to be pure white with no tartar from these efforts I would like to know what everyone does for their dental care routine? I have been searching around YorkieTalk and have seen that some people use Sonicare, OraVet or HealthyMouth. If I add a Sonicare instead of a regular toothbrush and a product like OraVet or HealthyMouth, would that be a better routine than only brushing her teeth with the CET? Also, is it recommended to brush 2x a day or is 1x enough like I have been doing? She hasn't had a real dental at the Vet office yet because I'm really scared about anesthesia for her so I'm hoping if I add something in her dental routine that her teeth will improve. My vet did say that her teeth are fine, though.. I just want to improve my dental at-home routine.

I know it is largely genetic. Some dogs you could brush 5 times a day and still have bad teeth. Just like humans, you could take great care of your teeth and still get cavities, but of course, taking good care of them will also reduce other issues. I brush every day and also they chew on CET chews. Mine are still young so only time will tell how their teeth will hold up. | |

| I just bought the Sonicare Plaque Control toothbrush in pink for Chloe. Target has a sale on them online! I was going to buy the nicer ones with more settings but I decided I rather spend less and see if she'll even like it first. I'm hoping that she does. What flavor CET do you use? I have only tried Vanilla-Mint but I'm thinking to try the Malt flavor.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I give Healthy Mouth w/ every meal and then I also use Wysong's Dental Sprinkle (Amazon) on each meal. I don't brush teeth. I also give chews....RMBs, CET, Munchy Stix, Honest Kitchen Beams, and a few others. Honestly, my experience has been that dental issues/dental health is super related to genetics...in both humans and dogs. My Wylie (who has SO many health issues) just had his first dental at age 10! His vet always said he didn't need one bc his teeth looked so wonderful...but this last year he had a couple back teeth that were looking a bit funky - so those were yanked during his recent dental, but that was all.

Don't be afraid of anesthesia. You have to have a respect for it and know that there is a very small risk to it but it should not prevent you from doing necessary medical treatments for Chloe. I have one elderly dog with liver and kidney disease who is a higher risk for anesthesia. She had a dental two months ago and I didn't worry about the anesthesia. I felt it was more important to her overall health to clean her teeth (and they were not that bad). I believe good oral care (home care and professional care when warranted) can really prolong their lives! I know Chloe is very young but if she is starting to have yellow and tartar on her teeth then she may need a dental in the next 6 mos to a year. Talk with your vet in advance so you won't be so nervous about what they are doing. I stopped worry about procedures and anesthesia a while ago. Anesthesia is the tool they need to help our dogs!

It's important not to apply any pressure and to let the sonicare do the work. You could damage their teeth and gums by brushing too vigorously. With that being said, I've gotten the seal of approval from 3 vets as to the effectiveness. I've heard of other vets and animal dentists that do not approve. Like anything, there will be varying opinions. Good luck!

The main thing is to be sure not to apply pressure. Let the brush do the work. Too much pressure could cause more harm than good.

| Yep, I think sometimes it just doesn't matter. Me personally? I went to the dentist a little over 6 months ago for a cleaning. I bought a Sonicare toothbrush, have been flossing religiously, brushing 2-3x a day, went 2 weeks ago for a cleaning and found out I have 3 more small cavities Jackson's teeth stay pretty good if I brush every day. Once I begin slacking, I notice the tarter build up fairly quickly. He's on a every 2 year dental "schedule" right now and that seems to work best for him.

| The Sonicare was a no-go! It came with 2 heads so I decided to try it on myself first and I couldn't handle the vibration, it felt very strong to me. For that reason, I didn't try it on Chloe's teeth. I think I'll just stick with a baby toothbrush for her.

| I am not sure if it was on this post or a different one but I remember somebody saying they use the healthy mouth water additive but instead of adding it to their water they put it on their food. Can you tell me the ratio that mix between water and the healthy mouth and also how much you put on their food. I have been adding it to their water but I think on their food would be better so I know that they are getting it. Also has anyone ever used plaque off dental powder it says you put it on their food and it is supposed to help reduce the tarter. I saw it on amazon or only natural pet.com. |
