Default What do you give for dental chews? Bones?

Are there any natural ways to promote teeth health? (besides brushing)

I home cook so Chloe's food isn't as hard as a dry food diet would be. Would bones be a good idea? If bones are good, what kind and do they have to be completely raw? I'm worried about the bacteria on a completely raw bone.

I gave her Nutri-Dent chews 1 time and they did clean her teeth but they got all squishy and gross looking. I'm looking for other options because when she eats her food she eats it pretty quick without needing to chew it a lot so I'm thinking maybe a bone would be good but I'm not sure.

Bones that are too hard like marrow bones can fracture teeth (been there, done that LOL).
I give my dogs Oinkies and let them chew for 10 mins a couple of times a day. I get them at target, they are pig skins. They get squishy too. BTW, home cooked food is no worse than hard kibble for the teeth. Just brush daily for the best home care.

Yeah, that's what I've heard about the bones so I'm trying to avoid them unless they're good to give. Overall, I'm much happier feeding the home cooked diet instead of always worrying before about what's the best kibble. She just eats her food like a vacuum and doesn't really chew it lol so I do want her to get something to chew on. I gave her a big carrot a few times and she liked it at first but now she just leaves it in her bowl and walks away like a little diva.

I just bought her Honest Kitchen Beams because I remember Wylie's Mom recommended them on 1 of my posts before. Hopefully the fish smell isn't too bad LOL.

I give RMB (raw meaty bones) - mostly Bison rib bones, CET chews, Honest Kitchen Beams, Munchy Stix, and a few other things.

I have given my Pierre baby carrots from day one. Every visit to the vet she always asks me if I brush his teeth and I say no. His teeth are perfect and bright white

Jackson gets his teeth brushed but I also give him bully sticks, Purina Dental Chews, Dentastix (I've been buying the newer Deep Clean ones, he likes them even better) and also sprinkle Wysong Dentatreat on his food.

I received the Honest Kitchen Beams! I actually don't mind the fish smell of it and Chloe likes them. She can't eat it though, I think it's too tough for her to break a piece off. Are your yorkies able to break off a piece of the Beam to eat it? Other than that I like that it gets Chloe to chew which is what I wanted. Did you try the Wishes too by any chance?

Oh good, you don't mind the smell...I don't find it too bad either. Yes, mine can actually consume these treats, even my Marcel and Pfeiffer who are 4-ish pounds. Do you think maybe Chloe is just too small yet? It's great, though, that she is just chewing in general...like you said. I haven't tried the Wishes yet.

We give our yorkie dura chew nylabones and only the original flavor. We always watch her when she is chewing usually before bedtime or after breakfast. We used to give bullysticks but she got very sick from them so our vet recommended nylabone and carefully watch her. She is four now and doing very well. Susan

My 4.5-pounder likes the Blue Buffalo dental chews, but gets them in pieces. The tiniest ones they make are way too big for him.

I love honest kitchens treat line! Lilah really enjoys the beams but she does not consume them either (2 yrs, 4.5lb)- the wishes are great but I don't feel that they provide the 'chewing' that the beams do. The wishes also come in a small heart shaped treat in a little metal container called quickies (really? That's the name they chose?...okay..) and until I over used them and lilah got bored they were her absolute go to favorite training treat. I totally have their recipe book too, lol- have you guys seen that? It's pretty friggin adorable...

Yorkie gets Nylabone Flexies. Our other dog gets Nylabone Dura Chews. The latter are way too hard and are a major cause of tooth breakage but we take the risk. Yorkie can't have anything consumable or she would either scratch her brains our or...die. I don't like the edible animal based chews anyway. Too greasy simetimes and too much bacteria.
