| 22 Week Old with Cronic Cough I am looking for some advice on a 22 week old Yorkie female with a chronic cough. I purchased her from a pet store (yes I know ) and they told me she had been treated for kennel cough and was up to date on her vaccinations. they claimed that sometimes their puppies get kennel cough because they give them ample socialization/play time and sometimes they get bouts of kennel cough. When I brought her home I did not noice much of a cough for about the first two days. Then the cough began. We took her to the vet for a check up about a week after she came home. They gave her antibiotics for the cough and otherwise was healthy (they did not want to give the next round of shots due to the cough however). She seemed to be getting better with the antibiotics for a few week, however 4 weeks later her cough was back full force. We took her back to the vet and they gave her another round of antibiotics and a cough suppressant. They also x-rayed her heart which came out normal and said her lungs were clear. The cough suppressant seemed to help somewhat but she was still coughing. We took her back to to the vet and they gave her cough suppressant and antacids. One week later and there has been little to no improvement with the antacid and cough medicine. There is no pattern to the cough - at rest or at play, day or night it just starts. It is kind of honking yet sometimes sounds like she is congested. Sometimes it seems to get better for a few day, but it always comes back. I have researched until I am blue in the face and can't seem to anything that explains her symptoms from kennel cough, to trachea to heart. Just wondering if anyone has any advice. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hi and welcome to YT ! In puppies, kennel cough can actually last for months, unfortunately. Keep doing what you're doing in treating the KC, and also suppressing the cough if it's bad (bc it interferes w/ sleep, which a pup needs). Do NOT get the KC vaccine at this time, if ever (I don't get it, as it's not considered a Core vaccine). Eventually, it will go away, but it may take a good amount of time.

| Kennel cough is terrible it can take many many rounds of antibiotics. You also may want to look into pet insurance that covers genetic issues because since you puppy came from a pet store that means she came from a puppy mill and they don't breed to have healthy dogs so you could end up with a dog that devolps some genetic issues and surgery and medicine for them can be extremly expensive or lead to other issues.

YT 500 Club Member | I would give it a little while longer because kennel cough can take a while. But if it does not improve you might want to check to see if it is a trachea issue. I have a puppy that does a real fast hack that last a second, sometimes when playing but he will do it like once a day but has done it pretty much every day since I had him (3 months now). |

| Hi and welcome to YT. When I brought Buster home he had a bad case kennel cough. We tried several rounds of antibiotics to try and cure it. I made the mistake of getting a vaccine done, on the Vet's recommendation, when he had not quite recovered and he went downhill fast and needed to be hospitalized on IV antibiotics for three days so take Ann's (Wylie'sMom) advice and wait on the vaccinations until completely healed. I hope your girl gets better soon.
