| 9 month old yorkie wont eat! Hello to everyone, Ive been having a few issues with Iris for the last month and a half. About a week before she went into heat she started being really picky with her food while before she would gobble it up in a minute or 2. I feed her with Artemis small breed puppy dry dog food. The moment she went into heat she stopped eating. I left her food out for her but she was not interested at all. After 24 hours of not eating she went into hypoglycemic shock and it was a nightmare. She was about 1.7 kilos then. For the past month ive been soaking her dog food in water and grinding it in the food processor into paste which i then force feed her by sticking it to the inside of the top of her mouth. She is now 2.2 kilos but still refuses to eat her dog food. I tried feeding her special home-cooked meals and she sniffs at them and just walks away. The only thing she has eaten on her own has been a fried egg although im not sure it is classified as fried since i didnt use any oil of any kind. And now she refuses even that. My question is: does anyone have any tips or tricks to get this sorted or will I have to force-feed her for the rest of our lives. Thanks to everyone in advance P.S she is not in heat anymore, hasnt been for a couple of days and is completely healthy apart from that. |

| Welcome to YT. Please be aware that your posts won't show up on the forum right away, since you are new the first several times you post a moderator will have to approve them for posting. This is to prevent spammers. I had a VERY picky eater that is no longer with us, and when she was 13 I discovered that she loved Nature's Variety frozen raw. She never turned her nose up at it, the only food she ever ate immediately without coaxing. Maybe you need to try other foods to see if you hit on something that she will eat. Also, have you had her BAT's run to check for any kind of issues with her liver?

| I'm taking her to the vet tomorrow for a general checkup and ill ask for a full panel again. So far health-wise she has been totally ok. I live in Bulgaria at the moment and the range of dog food available here is very narrow. The main 'high quality' dog food available is royal canin, applaws, eukanuba, orijen, genesis, proplan, equilibrio and just a couple of others. The best quality i've found so far is what i'm feeding her now. I volunteer at a pet store (no animal sale, just products) and ive tried offering her all of the ones i've listed above. Its the same thing every time...sniff and turn away. And im sure you understand how frustrating it is..I feel like it is my fault in some way that she is refusing. |

| She refuses to eat canned food and homecooked meals are an interest for one or 2 times and then she refuses them too. The vet said she is completely healthy. Her liver is fine, her bloodwork is fine. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Sometimes when a dog get sick, it thinks the food it was eating caused the illness and will refuse the food even though it had nothing to do with the feels of illness. I wonder if she was experiencing discomfort from having a heat? I would get her fixed as soon as possible, there may be more going on that you aren't aware of. Also, it one thing when a dog turns its nose up at kibble, but when it won't eat home cooked, I'd be worried. It's important that you tell your vet that.

| why not try some homemade dog food, here are two recipes: 1. beef or chicken hearts, carrots, green beans and chick peas 2, beef liver, carrots, rice Freeze meat for 3 or four days solid to help kill bacteria cook chick peas and rice as per normal and blanch the vegetables I put all through food processor, cut fine but not mush The meats I leave raw and also process to small bits but again not mush Freeze any portion you will not finish before 3 days Make the frozen portions also about a 3 days supply and thaw and use later Hopefully she will enjoy these healthy meals |

| Thank you all for your replies. She did seem very down during her heat cycle. My vets advice is to starve her out. To keep giving her water and sugar if she refuses to eat her kibble so she doesnt get hypoglycemia, but just to leave her kibble out until she eats it. Its been 3 days and she has started eating some kibble. I did get worried yesterday and soaked it for her so she ate a bit more. I also took in a yorkie that was left at the pet shop. She was abused and im trying to help rehabilitate her. It seems like now that she is at home too, iris senses the competition and eats kibble so sara wont eat it all. Im hoping things will get better in time. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Have you tried sprinkling her food w/ Parmesan cheese yet? That can work like a charm for some.
