| Skin Problems I have a 5 year old female yorkie. She had no problems until she reached the age of 4. She now suffers from horrible skin problems. Her fur is very oily feeling, she has terrible sores all over her little body even down her legs into her feet. Her skin in places has turned brownish/black. We have been back and forth with the vet. We have used atopica and apoquel to deal with her skin problems. No success! We have changed from Royal Canin Yorkie food, which she has eaten her entire life, to Kangaroo food. I have 3, believe it or not, other yorkies that do not have any skin problems to date. Has anyone else had success in dealing with these kinds of skin problems? I need help! Frustrated!! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I totally feel your pain - allergies are awful and complicated to deal with! First question, have you been to a Vet Dermatologist yet? If not, go FAST...they will get you on track faster than any general vet can. Has your kiddo been tested for thyroid problems? Are there *any* other random unrelated symptoms like fur loss, pot belly shape, lethargy, excessive peeing/drinking, excessive hunger, heat intolerance...ANYthing? If any of this rings a bell...then talk to your vet about testing for Cushings...bc Cushings dogs have recurrent and severe skin problems until the Cushings is treated. How long has she been on the kangaroo? Are you seeing any difference? This is a good shampoo: Amazon.com : Douxo Chlorhexidine PS + Climbazole... Are you giving fish oil supplements bc that can help w/ some inflammatory responses..? Also, have the skin areas been swabbed and cultured so that they can actually identify the bacteria (if any) that are causing these infections? Lastly, here is a thread on allergies from the Library: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...tart-here.html

| Is your kangaroo food by California Naturals? That was on multiple recalls 2013 & was really bad for pets to the point they stopped selling it. I was shocked to even see it in the P & G dog food booth at Superzoo this year.

| Thank you for your help Wylie's Mom. I am so sorry that it has taken me so long to get back to you. Maggie has been in the Emergency Hospital since Saturday with pneumonia. They also thought she was having heart problems but ruled that out with an echocardiogram and EKG. Her pneumonia is really bad and Maggie is not showing much improvement even on oxygen. We have to get through this and then move on to vet dermatologist for skin issues. Yes, lucyaboo it is California Naturals but I had already quit using it as it was too big for my little yorkies to eat. Thanks for the information about the recall. |

| mtntater ~ that's good you stopped using that food! You can get dog food/treat recall alerts from dogfoodadvisor.com . Check their menu for the page to put your email address. This website has a ton of info for pet owners. I hope your pup gets better very soon.

YT 2000 Club Member | dog I dealt with the skin problems with my little brown poodle, Chips. Went to a derm dog dr. and he said to put her on a venison diet. It really helped her. You may want to try venison and see if that does it. It will if she has a food allergy. If its grass, do not let her out in that. I think she may have developed it from her food. No more corn in her diet. Hope this helps. |

YT 2000 Club Member | I had 2 with skin issues and now they are free of flakey skin and itching. I switched their food to grain free lamb formula and I stopped using shampoo with oatmeal! They rarely itch and their skin and coat is shiny and healthy! Best of luck in finding help with skin issues and hope she is feeling better.
