| Baby Elphie has been sick.....Getting back on puppy food? Got my supposed 12 week old puppy about 3 weeks ago. She was fine til a few days ago and started noticing blood and mucous in her stool. She then became lethargic and went off her food. I took her to the vet who confirmed that from the breeders records she was born on May 15th, making her about 11 weeks old now. He checked her temp it was normal, heart rate was normal, he wasn't able to get a sufficient stool sample but what he was able to check was mostly mucous and he didn't see any worms, etc.. Because the symptoms and the unreliable sample he decided to treat her for coccidia. Gave her Albon to be administered orally for 5 days and also Panicure for 3 days. By that night she was feeling better but I've only been feeding her cooked chicken and rice since that day. Before I'd been feeding Eukaneuba wet food. The breeder told me to get the Eukaneuba dry food instead of wet and ease her onto it. When I went to Petsmart I talked to the Banfield vet who advised me to use Royal Canin dry food specifically for yorkie puppies. I mixed about 25% of that to the chicken/rice I've been feeding her and she ate some of it. So far so good I think. Oh, I should also mention that she's having hypoglycemia and I have to give her a bit of nutria or honey a couple times a day. My question is if the royal Canin food is a good quality food for her? She's less than a pound. The breeder called her a "Fairytale" yorkie and out of her adults are 3-4 lbs. I'm learning this can lead to increased medical issues. This is my first time as a yorkie mama so I'm trying to do what's best for little Miss Elphie. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Royal Canin should be okay for her, as long as she likes it and does well on it w/ her stools. Are her stools looking better?

| I'm so sorry your little one is not feeling well, but I can't help but wounder why you got another pup from the same breeder even after such a horrible experience and tragedy from the last one you got from her? I remember your last post and even commented on it. I truely hope you have a better outcome this time around. |

| Wow the breeder let her go at an awful tiny weight. Poor baby. I used RC with Lily when I first got her. I have now changed over to Orijen puppy. I only changed because Lily "lost interest" in RC. But I felt it to be a good enough food. I would listen to vet recommendations not the breeders. It sounds as if the breeder isn't doing what is in the best interest of her pups.

| Because she owed me another puppy and since we had no contract saying she'd refund my $500 the deal was that I would get another puppy out of the next litter. However I was too afraid to and I waited 2 years before getting another one. Asked her to keep it til 12 weeks of age (my last one, baby Loussi) was 8 weeks). She appeared very healthy as did all the other ones that were there with her. She's doing fine now.....she's not really eating much of the RD dry food and sort of picking around it to eat the chicken and rice still. Her stool is getting better also....not seeing any mucous blood or worms in it and it's still very soft but not diarrhea. |

| I'm not sure if food is the issue as the vet suspected coccidia but was unable to confirm because of the unreliable stool sample. However, because she was having issues and not much appetite, I made her some plain rice and boiled chicken and she really liked that. I'm trying to integrate the puppy food back into her diet now because we travel constantly for our job and home cooking isn't too much of an option at the moment. However, if I can make her enough food to last a week at a time I can certainly do that. I'll read up on it because I'd love knowing she was being fed the healthiest meals possible. Right now it was just about getting her to eat SOMETHING. I appreciate your advice! |

| Good luck with your little pup. Royal Canin is a very good food choice and is one many respected breeders recommend. Mixing in a bit of boiled chicken and rice is good for enticement, and some people add a little cottage cheese or yogurt, or a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese (smell makes food more desirable). As you are aware, getting her to eat every 2 hrs is very important, since she is so tiny and so young.

| I'd get her some of those tiny little cans of RC food for young pups.(mini) Feed her that in the morning and at night, leave plain dry out all day. |
