| My puppy might be overweight The vet today says he shouldn't gain any more weight but he is only 14 weeks old. He weighs 4 pounds and I don't know how to make him not gain anymore. He is a little pudgy but he is active, playing ball and chasing the other dogs around the yard. He is currently eating 1/2 cup of Royal Canin kibble for yorkie puppies a day and Cherrios for training, approx 5 a day. Anyone have any ideas?

| I don't think you should try to prevent a puppy from gaining weight. His weight in the first year is due to his genetics not his diet. He will probably mature to somewhere around 7 - 8 lbs, so don't worry. He needs plenty of nutrition in his growth time, so just make sure you feed him a good quality puppy food, but don't get too carried away with treats. They seem to grow in spurts.... Rounder then taller, etc., puppy's can look pudgy early on, but will even out as they mature.

| Thank you for the answer. I had a yorkie for 10 1/2 years but he was a very tiny one and that was so long ago I have forgotten a lot about raising puppies. I don't think he is too fat and he is so very lovable that I love him to pieces!

| The basic estimate of size based on growth charts is that you take their weight at 12 weeks, and double it, and that will be full grown. Of course, it varies. I like mine more on the "sturdy" size myself, and was happy they topped out around 7-8 lbs, and not fragile. Sounds like you got a real cutie, and as he gets a little older he won't seem so "pudgy".

| Doesn't sound like a very educated vet. Puppies can not be fat. I would not worry about it.

And I would run from that vet... seriously, what vet tells you a 14 week old puppy shouldn't grow any more?

| Thank you all so much. I feel better now and will not try to get him to lose or not gain any more. He is perfect to me.
