| ? what to give 3lb yorkie to prevent flees and heartworms Hello I'm wondering what you guys give your small yorkie to prevent flees an heartworms? I was giving him frontline and heart guard but now I've found out my vet is not going to carry frontline anymore. I would really like something that is combined into one pill but I've read because he weighs less then 5 lbs then you can not give them anything that is available in the combination pill. Just wondering what all my options are before going back to the vet. He is 1 an 1/2 years old weighs 3 lbs and very healthy. Thank you for your time |

| I just took my baby to the vet yesterday and the lady gave her an application of Revolution that helps with fleas, etc. & heartworm. It's topical, but she mentions that she may or may not have a temporary thinning spot there or hair loss. I don't feel comfortable giving heartworm meds orally, that and the fact that this is a "all-in-one" is a plus, cause I don't want to have to give multiple treatments.

| Welcome to YT. I use Heartgard Plus, and my picky little girl, Katie, eats and doesn't have a problem with it. I use Advantix II for fleas/ticks/mosquito repellant, but I have used Frontline Plus in the past. I buy the Heartgard from my vet, but the Advantix or Frontline can be purchased without a prescription. I purchase my flea medication from Dr. Fosters and Smith. Your vet may now be carrying Nexgard, a pill like Heartgard from the makers of Frontline and Heargard that protects from fleas and ticks. | Revolution. My vet said the other ones claim to be waterproof, but that is the only one that actually is. |

| There is a size of Revolution for under five pounds. You need a prescription for this. Revolution for Cats It says cats, but the under five pound size is for dogs and cats.

YT Addict | We live in FL my senior is in Revolution six now. No problems and works great. Kills flea, ticks ear mites and heartworm protection all in one. I use a shampoo on him that is soapless so it doesn't wash off. Apply monthly |

| We use revolution. No hair thinning and can wash your dog within 2 hours of applying it. Love it!

| Our Cody is only 2.8 pounds (he maybe closer to three now?) and we give him Sentinel for small dogs (they have a dosage from 2-10 pounds) all year round. It covers heartworm disease, fleas, hookworms, roundworms and whipworm. We give him Frontline only during tick season (from April-November). He seems to tolerate both meds. We order our Frontline from either Chewy.com or Drs. Foster and Smith. Our friend's Yorkie is Revolution and I that covers heartworm, fleas, ticks, roundworm and hookworm. She said her 4 pound Yorkie does well with it. Hope that helps. Last edited by YorkieMomNYC; 07-12-2014 at 11:17 AM. |

| We are in an area of NJ where the ticks can be really bad. We use Sentinal year round for HW, and Advantix II every other month during tick season. Works great for us!

| I love Revolution and I will rotate the spot where I drop the drop of Revolution...all right there on the shoulder/scuff of the neck area....I draw a clock in my mind on that area and I rotate 12 to 3 to 6 to 9 to 12....have not ever had any hair thinning, red irritated spot, etc. My smallest kiddos (under 3 lbs), do great with this! (I actually rotate Revolution / Canimax around on all my dogs so there are no drug tolerances built up, and there are a couple of things one or the other do not treat, so I feel like my pups get full coverage for anything they could ever come in contact with here!) |

YT Addict | The new vet I am usong for the puppy will not write a prescription for revolution. They is is not approved by their hospital as an approved heartworm preventative. So I wondering if I can use the heartgard that I got from this vet for 0-25 lbs for both (cut in half). They said I can give him half but that I would have to throw it away because it won't keep. My dogs don't run outside as we live on acreage. They are only out for brief periods of time just enough to do their business. Does anyone else do this? One yokie weighs 3.4 lbs 16 weeks, the other 13 lbs 6 yrs old. |

| We use Sentinel. Sheldon is just over 2lbs and is 14 weeks old. It's for fleas, heart worm, and certain intestinal parasite prevention. So far, so good, but we've only been on it for a few weeks. Last edited by BobbiB; 08-30-2014 at 10:05 AM. Reason: Add more info |

| Trifexis Some use Trifexis but there have been reports of serious illness associated with this product. Please read the Liver thread in the emergencies section recently where Trifexis may have been the problem? With such a small dog I would be hesitant to give it? Frontline is easy to purchase at any pet store so that should not affect your using it. |
