| Feeding Times Hi All, I have a 3 month male and i feed him at 9:30 am, 3:00pm, and 8:30pm. He's doing well but I haven't started walking him outside yet as he is going to the vet this Friday for his last vaccination. I was just thinking that I would like to adjust his feeding tunes because the last feeding seems to late. Please advise thoughts of what times you are feeding yours. |

| I wouldn't worry too much about feeding him to late. You have to do what works best for you and your pup and your schedule. I started free feeding mine because scheduled feeding just want working out. When I did schedule feed, she just wasn't hungry until late, about 7:30/8 and she would go to bed about 8:30/9. I was worried at first because I thought this would effect her sleep because she didn't poop before bed, but she sleeps great at night. 8:30/9 to whatever time I get up which is about 7. I take her out to go potty right when we get up and she usually poops then. What are your concerns about eating to late? |

| Thanks. The concern is that since I feed him late at 8:30pm that 9 out of 10 times I wake up at 3am because of poop Smell and get up to clean/disinfect. He sleeps in his bed on the floor and will get up and poop around that time. I thought that if I feed him earlier like 7 that perhaps he would poop before bedtime which is 10pm. Also I thought that he would be able to wait until we wake up but that is not the case. Perhaps he's still young? |

| I am no expert by any means, and others with more experience may have some better advice, but I will tell you what I did. Even when Lexi would eat early, sometimes I couldn't get her to poop before bed. I was frustrated thinking she would never sleep through the night, but I realized there was nothing I could do about that thing in particular. I couldn't force her to poop and I couldn't force her to sleep through the night. What did help was having her sleep in a crate. If your pup has never done this it may be difficult to start now. Dogs don't want to potty where they sleep so she would whine in the middle of the night when she needed to potty and I would take her out and put her right back in the crate. She had one pee accident in her crate and after that started sleeping through the night with no problems. That was at about 3 1/2 months. Every dog is different though. Some take longer to sleep through the night. At 5 months she still sleeps in her crate next to my bed and I will probably continue this because she sleeps so great. Does your pup potty outside? Is there any way you can restrict where she can go when sleeping in her bed? Crate or gate that way she has no where to go when she has to potty? Another option would be to set your alarm to around the time she usually gets up to poop or a little before and take her out before she has a chance to have an accident. Just some ideas. Others might have some better advice than me! |

| Thank you. He use to be in a crate but would get up and usually have to go at that time. He's now graduated and I've removed the crate and he sleeps in his own bed. He wakes up when he had to go and will do potty no. 1 on the wee wee pad and sometime potty no 2 in the pad. I will start walking him on Friday as that's when he will get his last vaccination. So maybe that will help. |

| He seems very young to be getting his last shots. Are you sure about that? I personally would free feed a puppy sense they are at risk of developing hypoglycemia.

| That's his last shots before he can be walked, I'm sure there will be more so he's not done in total but the very said he can be walked on Friday. Also, I watch him closely for signs of hypoglycemia and he is never lethargic, tired. I also check his gums and they look fine. |

I think being able to walk him outside after his vaccinations will also be very helpful. I know with Toki we had a similar issue with her needing to poop around 2 or 3 AM when she was a puppy. And actually we had the same issue with Teddy when we brought him home at 10 months. What worked well for us was going for a nice walk in the evening after the last meal so that they had the opportunity to empty their bowels (they almost always did). Both walking/exercise and finishing a meal create the urge to defecate. This pattern with the evening walks (we also do one in the morning around breakfast) worked well for Toki and Teddy...they weren't waking us up in the middle of the night needing to go out or to a mess and they were able to make it until the morning without accidents. I don't know how much of a difference it makes but I was also only feeding them two meals a day (Toki was a larger puppy and Teddy was pretty much full grown at 9 pounds so I wasn't as concerned with the potential for hypoglycemia). Even now if I skip some type of an evening walk, Teddy (almost 2 years old) might wake me up in the middle of the night or REALLY early in the AM ...he doesn't have accidents but gets very obnoxious when "the urge" strikes (which I appreciate over having to break out the carpet cleaner ). so I try my best to adhere to our regular routine. | |

| Thanks for your advice. I don't crate him anymore at night but he has his own bed next to mine in my bedroom and I have a gate at the door so he does not go out of my room. In fact, I also have sectioned off my room so that he doesn't have the full run of my room. I will definitely start walking him at night after his last meal and hope that will do the trick. |
