| How much should my new puppy be eating? We have decided to feed Royal Canin and he likes it (eats it with gusto, just a few bites at a time though) and has had plenty of firm poops and has tons of energy. As far as I can tell, he is acting like a very normal puppy....eats, plays, drinks water, sleeps, repeat. I am feeding him 3 times a day and no issues with hypoglycemia. I understand that dog food companies are in the business of selling dog food so I have always "underfed" my dogs just slightly from the recommended amount on the bags. It just seems that Pluto is only eating maybe 1/2 of that? This is my first yorkie and never had a dog quite as small so it might just be my perception is off as far as how much he can truly eat. I don't want to try to force him, surely don't want to make him sick. Am I looking for a reason to worry? LOL...I am shocked at how much I love the little guy only after having him since Saturday afternoon!!! Thanks, Amy |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Awww, sounds like you are IN LOVE . Too sweet. CONGRATS on your new baby. As long as you're offering food 3-4x a day, he should be getting enough and eating what he needs. Sometimes too when they first come to their new home, they may eat a little less just due to stress/adjustment. As long as he's not showing any signs of hypoglycemia (common to yorkie puppies), he should be fine. If you are seeing signs of it, then pick up some Nutrical to have on hand.

| Yep, definitely in love! I have Nutrical just in case but he seems pretty normal and happy. I guess I just can't get past a pup eating a few nuggets and being full. Wish it worked as easily for me!!! LOL Thanks, Amy |

| Hi Amy, congratulations on your new puppy! I agree with Ann that he could be adjusting to his new home, and his appetite may increase. Like you, I have never fed the recommended amount on the food bags. They tend to overestimate even for the most active dogs with big appetites. Also, I had to hand feed Max his entire first year. He ate very little out of his bowl. I agree with not forcing to eat, but if you are ever concerned that he does need more -- you can try using the food as rewards for trick training or potty rewards.

| I read in your other thread that he is just 6 weeks old. How much does he weigh? He is doing okay eating kibble? Keep a very close eye on him. If you encounter any problems, you might want to post in the breeder section to ask what to supplement with.

| Yes, he is actually 7 wks today. I am not sure his exact weight, but he is pretty small. He is doing great though....I just like to find things to worry about I guess. He is eating his dry food, pooping solid, drinking water and making lots of pee, and has a TON of energy. Of course, he has a basket full of toys and wants to chew on my toes instead. And poor baby has tried his best to get his new "big sister", my miniature schnauzer, to play with him. She isn't impressed yet though. I am offering his food 3-4 times a day and he eats it. I guess because I have never had such a small dog before, it is hard for me to imagine that he is getting plenty. Everything points to the fact that he is though....unless there is something I am missing. ??? Thanks, Amy |
