| What foods are good for acid reflux? He has an appointment tomorrow for his acid reflux(I diagnosed him myself lol) but I'm wondering what foods will help and be good for his throat. I don't want it to damage his esophagus. Would yogurt help? Anyone know some foods. I'm hoping he can get some meds to help. I'm 99% sure it's acid reflux. |

| Poor Joel. I don't think yogurt would help. I have no idea what might work in dogs. Maybe he just needs a sensitive stomach type of diet.

| The only thing that helps me is to take small sips of ice water, don't gulp. I think the cold soothes things and the water dilutes the acid. Good luck and feel better. |

| Does Joel throw up easily and belch a lot? Molly was just looking out the window and I heard her belch and she threw up the water she had just had a few minutes earlier. I have suspected she had acid reflux but wasn't sure.

| One thing I read was put them on a low fat/low protein diet for acid reflux. He was on a pretty high protein food with high protein treats so I already fixed that. Quote:
He doesn't throw up easily, he will burp once after eating which he's always done The most thing that makes a problem is if he eats too much at once or too late at night so I don't do that anymore. If he happens to eat too much or too many treats or sneaks something he'll have so much trouble at night and swallows all night and can't sleep, also I can actually hear the liquid/acid going up and down his throut and sometimes he'll cough. Two nights ago he had a really bad night He woke me up every hour all night to go outside. | |

| My vet prescribed Pepcid AC for Momo once...It's only for a short period of time, 3-5 days. Yogurt would be a dairy product, so it would not be good for acid reflux. Parsley is very good for reducing stomach acid...the honest kitchen sent me what they call parsley bombs, it's parsley seeds to plant & grow your own, for the dogs. Makes their breath fresh too.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | The best thing you can do is manage it w/ pepcid or something similar so that the reflux doesn't occur to in turn cause esophagus damage.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | When Roxie was diagnosed with gastric reflux the Pepcid didn't help. So they put her on Prilosec (I had to have it compounded for her size). After a couple of months on that daily she was fine. She's been off it now for almost a year or so and knock on wood has been fine. I hope Joel feels better.

| He went to his appt. and I didn't really find anything out. The vet that saw him was the owner guy and I never really find anything out when I take any of our dogs to him. He's more old school and a little rough with Joel, Joel doesn't like him lol. Also he'll say what he thinks something is without doing any tests or anything and than that's it. He said it's only acid reflux if the swallowing happens when his stomach is empty. I thought acid reflux was caused from eating too much at once or too late at night which is what happens to Joel. He said feeding him before bed should fix it but that's what flares him up to swallowing all night. So everything he said to do is opposite of what needs to be done. The other vet there is his daughter and she is awesome and the reason I LOVE the place Joel loves her and she's very helpful and has been there through Rosco and Dixon and is so good with all our dogs I LOVE her I just spent 52$ to hear "Feed him at night" So I'll make an appt. when she's there(and she never charges for the vet visit) |

| I've had acid reflux for the majority of my life. My triggers vary but some are: Eating too much, going too long without eating, too much fat/grease, acidic foods/drinks, spicy food, sometimes dairy (yogurt and cheese are usually ok), and stress Yogurt is weird, it usually doesn't cause the issues other dairy products do. Sammy Mommy mentioned ice water, be careful because that can be a trigger for some people. Poor Joel, having acid come into your throat/mouth is horrible. It takes forever for the taste and pain to stop. |

What food is he eating? Higher amounts of grain can lead to fermentation in the stomach (which produces gas). When the gas cannot escape from the mouth or the butt, bloating can occur, which is an emergency. I keep Mylecon Drops for infants and/or Bloat Buster on hand. Simethicone is the active ingredient and dispels the gas pronto. Do not exercise him 1 hour before a meal or 2 hours after. Limit water during meals. Feed smaller meals throughout the day. Measure behind his front legs, and then from the base of his neck to where his tail starts. My Finny is 22 inches around X 12 inches long. Gas gets trapped in her stomach bc of how she is built. If I lift her front paws up (sometimes I hold her upright in my lap) after a meal, it makes it easier for the gases to come out. I also give her gentle tummy rubs to help move the gas around, when I can hear it and feel it. I'm in the habit of checking her tummy after every meal. She usually runs to me when she has any kind of a problem, so that helps too.
