YT 2000 Club Member | Please tell me Im doing the right thing..(long) And please do not bash or critize me because I know what happened, shouldnt have.. but I need sound advice. I have a terrier/cocker mix female turned a year in november that weighs 10 pounds. We brought her into my house because she was being neglected when she was just a few weeks old. In august we got a free cocker spainel pup for my son for his 10th birthday. He is approx. 9 months old, 16 pounds. Nahla, the female went into heat we "thought" at the end of Jan. First dog for us to go into heat, dont know much about it. NO INTENTIONS what so ever of breeding. Low on funds, we were waiting on our incime tax money to come back to get them both fixed. When we noticed she was bleeding, we kept the two of them apart. Like seperate rooms, in kennels, not anywhere near each other apart. This past week we have noticed that her nipples were enlarged. I had to take her to the vets for her pre spay ck up and a ear infection so I asked the vet While we were there what she thought. Xrays were done, from what was seen she is pregnant, with just one that they coukd see. . They only thing that I could think is how it happened if she was in heat before we actuallly knew and when my kids put them outside in the fence yard after school they connected. Other than that I have no clue how. :/ This poses several issues as most of the breeders know. Most small dogs carrying singeltons need c sections, because pup is either too big or they dont go into labor on their own. Its not even gaurented that if a c section was done the pup will survive. Because she was able to see the pup she is far enough along and is about 10 to 15 days of giving birth. So the options we were giving were.. Abort/spay. Schedule a csection that will not guarantee us a heathly mom/pup for 800 plus dollars that we cannot afford or let her try and have it hoping she does well which also doesnt guarentee a healthy mom/pup or she could need an emergency csection costing us even more money.. She did say we could wait as long as possible to spay her to see if the pup will survive still calling it a spay/abort (cheaper) but most of the time the pup is born to premature and will die. So even no my heart is breaking and I feel so bad that this even happened we have chosen to spay/abort and she is going on Monday. Please, please tell me Im doing the right thing..

| I think you are doing the right thing. If you can not afford a c-section for her, how would you be able to afford the care of her after the pup is born, as well as the pup itself? Sometimes after a c-section, moms won't take to the pup immediately and you have to step in with formula, and feed every 2-3 hours, which is exhausting, and can be expensive. And emergency c-sections are more expensive and you face the same risks. If you can not care for your girl and a pup, have her spayed. Now. Don't wait.

| I agree you are doing just what I would do for my female under the circumstances. With that large father and who knows how much larger dogs are in his background whose genes could show up in this singleton, she maybe couldn't even carry the puppy long and begin to bleed and abort on her own while you aren't home and could bleed to death. I wouldn't chance it and would end this pregnancy ASAP and then have her spayed as soon as the vet says she can have it done. I hope she does well with her surgery Monday.

YT 2000 Club Member | Thank you both. I appreciate your advice. I know in my head its what needs to be done.. But knowing its a puppy, a life. I needed confirmation from others that Im doing the best thing by having it done.

| I think you did the right thing. From the sounds of things, the pup may be too big, and your female way too immature to properly care for her baby. It would be more irresponsible for you to go through with the pregnancy not knowing what to expect, possibly putting your female's life in danger.

| I'm going to make some unhappy with this, but I would not spay. It is late term. The vet may even be delivering a barely viable pup at this point. I would plan a c-section as late as possible in hopes of saving the baby for $800 or get a line of credit for an emergency c-section.

| I too would have a difficult time spaying at this late date. What is the vet going to do if the puppy is alive? That thought makes me cringe. I am sorry....I don't want to say you are doing the right or wrong thing...not for me to decide what is right or wrong. Just putting that out there. I hope all goes well.

| A spaying/aborting could be more dangerous at least that is what a reproduction specialist said on here in a thread awhile ago. I would try and wait and if she doesn't go into labor then get the csection or plan a csection. There are dogs that have one puppy all the time and it survives.

| What a hard decision to make. I am so very sorry that you and your family are in this situation. I can't advise because I've never been there, done that and some things it's really hard to know what I'd do if I were in your position. I would have a good ole heart to heart with the vet, ask the difficult question, "If you were wearing my shoes what would you do". I'd take the vet's advice home and discuss the situation with the family and make it a "family decision". All I know is that I'll be keeping you and your little one in my thoughts and prayers and will be watching for an update. |

YT 2000 Club Member | It is a very hard decision for me and my family to have to make. The vet spent alot of time with me going over good, bad, and the ugly of what could happen. Then I spoke with my good friend as she is a vet tech and basically said the same thing. Pretty much singletons have a 50 percent of survival. I do know that Nahla was a singleton, her mom was 10 ish pounds and dad was bigger and Nahla's mom was never taken to the vet etc and she did fine. My biggest concerns are, the size of the pup, what happens if she goes into labor while Im not home, cost of the c section. We have care credit but its only a 500 dollar limit. The thought of me taking her pup from her breaks my heart. Thats why I needed some advice of others. Thank you all who has posted.
