Default Bloody mucus in stool... Advice please.

So 2 days ago I notice my baby had 2 stools with just a little bloody mucus on it. These 2 stools occurred at the same time, it wasn't like he pooped once at 5 then another at 6. Also throughout this week I've also noticed that his poops have not been normal. He been having a mixture of normal poops and soft stools. The soft stools are just soft and do not look like diarrhea. These soft stools still have a definite shape just pretty soft. But that's been like an on and off thing. Anyways I don't know if I should be concerned?. Usually when he stays home alone for a long time he destroys things and eats them. For example, somehow he always manages to find paper/toilet paper/cardboard and destroy it and eat it. I always try my hardest to pick these things up or close the restroom door before I leave the house but he somehow finds his way to either of these things! It worries me a lot because lately he been really good about finding these things and eating them. Also the day before Yesterday I had been away from home from about 7am-1pm. When I arrived home I noticed that he hate eaten a small portion of a cardboard box, which an all actuality it seemed like a big piece to me cause he's a small dog (5lbs). Then a day later I see the bloody mucus on stool. Could it be all the paper etc that he eats that caused this bloody stool ?? I'm starting to think the best thing for me to do is to put him in a kennel when I leave the house, he's just never been in a kennel before so I don't know how hard that would be for him?

My other assumption is that last Sunday I took him to a park, it wasn't his first time at a park, and I'm thinking maybe he picked up something there and he's just showing signs of it? Maybe he ate something that had worm eggs or something??

My last assumption is the new food I started giving him. He's been eating it for a month now. I have noticed that the food has cause some gurgling sounds in his stomach. Would it mAke sense that after a month of eating this food, he's finally showing signs of effect?

He's been playing and acting completely normal also eating and drinking normL. No vomiting, nothing. And since yesterday his poops have been perfectly normal not soft at all. Should I be concerned? Could this just be a random blood stool or could it be something else? Advise is greatly appreciated!

Does he take monthly heartworm protection like heartgard or something? If so, it's not likely to be a parasite. You could always have a fecal done to be sure but it sounds like he strained when going and had a little tear. If he's ok, i would prob just watch him. If he has bloody diarrhea that's a concern and he should be seen. If also keep him out of harms way with eating stuff he shouldn't by crating or keeping him in a small safe area.

He does not take preventatives. Heart worms can be found in fecal tests? I thought every worm could be detected in fecal tests except heart worms. I will have to go to the clinic to get that done on Monday just to make sure.

A strain is a good assumption didn't think about that. I hope it's just a strain! Is it possible for the cardboard to be stuck in his intestines ?

I feel like I'm reading a story on my pup right now!! Franklin has had the exact same symptoms soft stool almost mucousy then today he had blood in stool, red Frank blood but it was formed. Being a worry one of the mother I took him straight to the vet with the sample. they did give me some Antibiotic and this special science diet canned food To help settle his stomach With whatever is going on. He hates antibiotic and I'm really hesitant to give them this food it looks so gross he's used to premium kibble topped with fresh food and this stuff looks like tuna and poop. Really. My pup also doesn't take anything for heartworm and I have a feeling he might have ate a little bit of something bad. The Vet is checking for parasites

Since the blood is red, that means it is something in the lower intestines, or what Cathy said a tear. A very firm poop could cause a tear in his anus, but the soft poop has me a little concerned. It could very well be from eating naughty things around the house when you are gone. I think it's best to either kennel him or block him off to only a certain part or room(s) of the house while unsupervised.

Toto does the same thing. When we are home, he has free reign. He behaves. If we go out for a bit (less than an hour) we leave him out. Though sometimes a one hour trip becomes two, you know how it is. We have come home to trash bags torn open, trash and tissues strewn all over the place. Food trash, you name it. And he knows he did bad bc as soon as he sees us he hides behind the couch. If we have just put him in his crate like we were supposed to, there would be no problem.

If you don't like the idea of crating him, get an ex-pen or baby gates to block off certain parts of the house.

Did your vet tell you the reason for giving you antibiotic? Did Your vet have an idea of what the issue could be? My vet clinic is usually open on Saturdays but it's closed today because of a power outage in town. I think I will try calling the same clinic in a town close by see if they are open! I wish I could post a pic of the poop (that would probably not be appropriate lol), just so others can get an insight of what I saw.

I'm really hoping that the cardboard just caused a little tear while pooping. I wouldn't want it to be something more serious! I've never thought of baby gates but I like that idea! I will have to look into those.

I think its soo crazy how they can be soo well behaved when one is at home! My king is not interested at well in paper, toilet paper, etc when I'm at home.... The second I leave its a different story!

That is correct. A fecal would check for other parasites but a heart worm test is done with a blood test. I asked if he was on heartgard or something similar because these preventatives also prevent some or most intestinal parasites. Since he is not, then I would go ahead and get a fecal exam done if this continues.

As for firm poop vs. soft poop and blood, a strain is a strain. My older dog had diarrhea earlier this week and at the tail end of it had a bloody stool. If this continues or he has any other symptoms then don't wait and get him to a vet. Better safe than sorry.

Also, I would start preventatives after he has tested negative for heart worms. You can get sentinel cheaper than heartgard. All 50 states are recommended to protect against heart worm using preventatives. And, you'll avoid parasites for the most part (nothing is 100% tho).

Chicken does that same thing to one of mine. There was also a food without chicken that did it.
Good luck trying to figure it out!

My pup had similar symptoms, but he was much older when he came down with them(9 years old). We found out he had IBD and he would have such tummy aches that he wouldn't eat in the am. He had such audible tummy sounds that I could hear them across the room.

It sounds like the mucous coating is from having an upset tummy, but the bloody stool could be the result of a few different things.

It's definitely possible that the random stuff he's eating could be causing the issue, or it could be the new food he's eating. Something is upsetting the poor little guy's GI tract!!

What where the antibiotics called??

Does he have other things at home to occupy his time while you are gone?? Chew toys or puzzle toys?? etc etc?? Perhaps you should buy trash cans with the lids on top that you have to push open with your feet. My friend had to do that with his bathroom trash bc his dog kept eating it. .

You could also buy a baby gate and confine him to a smaller, safe area where he can't tear things up...like the kitchen. Just make sure you pick up the trash and rugs and anything he can get into. You could leave his toys for him in there and perhaps a radio or TV on for him. One pet parent just bought dog TV for her pup and they love it!!

I imagine eating all of that stuff is really upsetting his tummy. Some of these little guys really have sensitive tummy's and they cannot handle things like human food or even certain brands of dog food, so I imagine things like cardboard can really do a number on them

metronidazole is The name of the anabiotic and he's on for two weeks he thinks it might be the parasite Giardia.

He said it it's a possibility it could be the parasite Giardia my pup was playing near cat poop a couple weeks ago and had diarrhea with mucous, it went away and then came back and this time bloody stool this morning, which is apparently kind of a symptomatic thing that parasite. The antibiotic flagyl is used to treat it. I'm supposed to get a call back tomorrow with the results if it's not that I'm going to ask him if he can just get off of it.

My puppy has a playpen which I've used since I had him and he does great with it when we leave but I also let him roam free sometimes now and he doesn't seem to get into anything. I love this play pen Because it's big enough for how small he is at 3 pounds it fits his bed his water a potty pad and toys and its a great price. Here's the link! It's by Iris. A white 4 panel with door. I don't like the thought of crates so this makes me feel better LOL because it has an open top
