Help with homemade chicken/rice diet I am having problems with my almost 4 yo yorkie and just can't seem to get to transition him to a regular food again. I have been making him boiled chicken/rice and it's the only thing that seems to work so we are considering staying on this permanently. I know he can't just have chicken/rice forever because it's not balanced, but have heard of people supplementing with powders to create a balanced diet from it. Does anyone do this as their yorkie's permanent diet? And if so, what do you supplement with as far as nutrients, etc. Thanks!!!

We use BalanceIT.com for our homecooked recipes and they have a balanced recipe with just chicken and rice. If you make an account, they have a recipe generator where you can select your primary protein source and primary carbohydrate source and it will create a recipe based on your pet's weight for a day's worth of food. They will also include in the recipe how much of the BalanceIT supplement to add (we use that supplement blend just for the sake of simplicity).

I rotate different recipes since my dog will eat most veggies and pretty much anything lol. We have used a recipe that had chicken, brown rice, and veggies plus the supplement. I do try to pick recipes with a wider variety of ingredients since I prefer my pups to get nutrients/vitamins from whole foods as opposed to just a supplement blend but I'm not sure how much of a difference it makes...just a personal preference. And I just saw your other post with your pup having the diarrhea and vomiting...if they determine that your Petey has some type of medical condition that is causing these symptoms (and not just stress or eating something funky), you'll definitely want to consult with your vet for a specific diet to address that. BalanceIT does have recipes for dogs with medical conditions but they will require approval from your vet or a consultation with a nutritionist first. I hope that he continues to improve and starts feeling better.
