YT 1000 Club Member | What's the deal with Avocado ? I have seen several references that state that Avocado is not recommended for consumption by our Dogs. I have been using Beneful Healthy Fiesta (a chicken formulae) for one of the choices for my guys, and just now noticed that it had Avocado in it. Beneful (by Purina) is not an off the wall Brand, and I wonder why they would use something in that formulae which was bad. I thought I'd get some comments for you guys first, before I started, which may be a less than pleasant conversation with their Customer Service. Your thoughts will be appreciated, S.W.

| Good point, I know people who feed their dogs avocado as snacks, but I've only ever heard it's bad for dogs, perhaps related to high fat content |

| It's the pit that is the problem.

| I believe that is is related to the pits/plant itself. Also, avocados have persin (not sure of spelling) in them that some experts view as potentially toxic. Not sure of all the details though. |

| Sorry to be the bearer of bad news... I'd be more concerned over propylene glycol, artificial colorings & menadione. Propylene Glycol - Pet Poison Helpline Artificial Coloring in Dog Food | eHow Menadione Sodium Bisulfate: A Pet Food Ingredient to Be Wary of

| Solid Gold food has an avocado formula. This has been on the market for years. Coyotes eat avos that fall from the tree. Yes, it will kill parrots - a tiny bite killed my little guy.

YT 1000 Club Member | Thank all of you for your replies (keep um coming). It seems that this Thread has warrantly become more about the use of Purina than about Avocado, which is just fine. It certainly got me going through the list of good/best foods available ! But, I still haven't seen here or in other material, where is says it's OK for them to consume Avocado, or, have I missed that ? (the Meat/Pulp, not the Ryne or Pit)

| Beneful dog food Hello, This is my first post in this forum. My Yorkie (Pinkey), has been eating nothing but Beneful dog food all her life! She is sixteen years old and as spry as she was at five or six! I haven't heard any bad results with Beneful so far. She is extremely picky! She doesn't want anything else but milk bone treats! Also, I keep a little Collidal Silver in her drinking water. It kills all the germs that may possibly get in it. She has never been real sick in her life! Good luck with your doggie! |

| Milk bone isn't any better than Beneful. Both are yuck!

| One variety of Avocado can cause the runs if the skin or pit is eaten. It is not a harmful type of toxin. Just annoying. Avoderm dog food has been on the market for decades. |

| Milk Bone and Beneful Yes, I agree, they are both not as good as I would like for her. I tried quite a few different types of food and she wouldn't eat it at all! I probably could have waited until she had to eat, but I can't do that to her old as she it. It hasn't hurt her for almost 16 years, probably won't hurt to continue! I bought six different types of food at one time, she didn't like any of them! Some of the recommended best I could find. Her brothers and sisters loves it but she won't eat it at all! |
