| kidney desease in another of my girls We lost Ginger ( her mom) to kidney disease some months back and now one of her daughters has it too, she had a really high bun and creatine level. she doesn't want to eat now and has lost about a pound, a pound in a little 6 lb yorkie is a lot I just don't know what to do to prolong her life, we try food with low protein and she won't touch it. She is just not herself I can tell you I am sick about going thru this again. We are still crying all the time over losing her mom. The vet says its a "yorkie thing" I didn't really like that answer I wish we could go to holistic vet but we spent tons of money at reg vet, I can't imagine what the hol vet charges. does anyone have any thoughts or ideas about things I could do? thanks |

| I'm so sorry for your loss of Ginger, and now your other baby being so sick. I sure don't have any advice or knowledge, but I know many here do. I think more people would see this thread and respond if you asked admin to move it to Sick and Injured section. I hope you can find some answers! Hugs to you!

| So sorry your baby girl is going through this & the loss of her Momma. I'm don't have experience in kidney disease, but found this site to be very informative & helpful. Maybe it will help in terms of diet, of course closely monitored & approved by her vet. Best of luck! DogAware.com Health: Kidney Disease in Dogs

| Hi, I'm new here and I just wanted to say I'm sorry you're going through this. My 14 year old boy, Bear, is also going through this. Hopefully you have some answers by now but if not, I can tell you what my vet is recommending. First we did a kidney flush. Luckily I work as a veterinarian assistant so I was able to do this at home but your little girl will probably need to be hospitalized on IV fluids for a few days. Now I'm maintaining him on SQ fluids at home several times a week. You're vet should be able to teach you how to do this or if you're not comfortable with it, you can take her in and let them do it. There is also an over the counter pill called Azodyl that my vet recommended that is supposed to help bring their BUN levels down. I order it online from a place called entirelypets.com. There are other websites that have it also or you may be able to get it through your vet. It does need to stay refrigerated so just make sure whoever you order it from, packs it on ice. I would also talk to your vet about getting her on a medication for nausea such as Famotidine or Zantac if you haven't already as kidney disease makes them nauseous. I buy Zantac over the counter and make a suspension out of it. I also tried the low protein food and Bear wouldn't touch it so I feed him anything he wants. I would get a variety of foods to try for her. One day Bear will eat one food but the next day he doesn't want any part of it but he will eat something else. Some days he will only eat table scraps. I'm happy as long as he's getting something in him. I hope this helps and I hope your little girl is doing well. |
