| cleaning at age 13 Hi all..... Is it worth having their teeth cleaned at age 11 or 13....I think they are too vulnerable to being put under that kind of sedation at their age. Any comments or advise. My GiGi is 11 and kinda needs her teeth cleaned...this would be the 2nd time in 11years if I have it done. I am really to afraid to put her under...you never find out that they have a low tolerance until it is too late. tina

| Age isn't a disease. Just do preop testing. My girl had a dental in June. She just turned 12. She was kissing my face about ten minutes after the Iso was turned off. The bacteria that is present now will just get worse leading to organ weakening.

YT 2000 Club Member | dog My Spud is 9 and I will not put him under anesthesia . I brush his teeth every night and I think it is too risky at that age to do that. Please be careful before you make that decision. |

| Nonsense! My dog was 11 when he had his first dental. My other dog is 13, has liver and kidney disease and she just had a dental. Anesthesia is very safe if you have a competent vet.

| I just had a dental done on my senior pup, George. I was terrified, but he did just fine. Here is a link to his thread about it....I went to a specialist because he is about 14 years of age and has collapsed trachea.. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...ds-dental.html Just be sure your vet is using up to date anesthesia.

| Thank you all for your input. I will check to see if I can get a specialist....and yes I will be pacing the floor with Pucci my 13yr old Yorkie. His teeth still look ok to me...he has never had a cleaning but GiGi's teeth look like they have tartar build up in the back. So she might really need it. Thanks again... Tina

| The last time I got on here and told a lady that was VERY anxious about having her little dog spayed/neutered (I really cant remember which it was), Oh dont worry, healthy young dog, good vet, no problem....pup will be fine, they do this all the time, blah, blah, blah.....and that baby DIED on the table. I was as devastated as the owner of that pup was.....I swore I would NEVER again encourage people that are scared to death to have a surgical procedure done, "go ahead, they will be just fine". It will be "just fine" for ME....I dont have a dog in that fight, and if the pup dies, "so sorry, usually doesnt happen, praying for you, etc"....but it leaves the person that lost their baby, devastated. All I can say is what I personally do....I have HAD a senior lady die during a dental, years ago, competent vet, Iso anesthesia, pre op work/ekg/etc.....I do not do dentals on my dogs over 10 years old. I opt for Clindy-Drops, prophylactically. Has worked perfectly for me and my dogs. |

| My 13 year old wouldn't have outlived her prognoses as to liver and kidney disease without the dentals she has had these past couple of years. Anesthesia is a risk but very small when safe gas and drugs are used. I'm willing to weigh that small risk against overall better health. I know my vets well and what kinds of places I spend my money in. So that definitely factors into my decision.

| Been there, done that, dont like the benefit/risk ratio.....even moderate tartar build up versus risk of loosing my senior....especially if there is not a SEVERE case of peridontal disease.....this is not a risk/benefit ratio I even argue with myself over. I like the "pulse therapy" antiobiotic prophylactic therapy better. The little girl that I lost would have lived an additional 3-6 years with no terminal effects from the tartar build up on her teeth. Very worse case, she MAY have lost a couple of molars.... If I had only known about the antibiotic therapy......it is a much better option for me. That little lady was the LAST dog I have ever lost due to a tooth/tartar related occurance.....severe grade 4+ peridontal disease, loose and falling teeth, inflamed bleeding gums, that is a different story......but tartar removal for my seniors? No...... Last edited by Yorkiemom1; 11-15-2013 at 10:25 AM. |

| Hi All.. Thank you all for your posts. It is a very controversial subject. Before I do anything I wanted to take all circumstances into consideration....the good and the bad. I am always very squeamish to put my babies under...as I guess most all of us are. I think these little guys are much more vulnerable to higher risk than humans are. But when push comes to shove you gotta do what you gotta do. But teeth cleaning at the age of 13ish is a kinda.... "will they survive better with plaque or is it better to have it removed". Of course I prefer to have it removed but it will take a lot to get me to the vet to have it done....esp at this age. Yes, I will be looking for a specialist and it will be on a day that I can take off from work so I can be there as soon as she wakes up. And of course I will check out the advise of her vet as he knows her health status and has had more experience with this than me. But thanks again for all your knowledge, that is the best start. as soon as we make a final decision I will post and let you all know how GiGi made out , what we went through and of course if the vet wanted us to do it at all. Thanks Tina & GiGi

| Also vegetation on leaflets on heart valves, along with endocarditis....that is why I like the antibiotic preventative therapy....keeps all that from happening.... |

| Personally, I will stick with dental cleaning. I don't believe that antibiotics will prevent the damage done by the bacteria from severe periodontal disease. The risk of anesthetic death is so very remote.
