YorkieTalk Newbie! | Brown patches allergies? My little yorkie, Savannah, has little brown patches on her skin here and there and she is scratching a lot - especially around her ears, under her neck and behind her front legs. I bathe her with prescription shampoo and put prescription 'leave on lotion' afterward. I make her dogfood - turkey with oatmeal and a healthy powder mix from health food store products as well as vitamin drops. I dehydrate her treats which I make from turkey breast and ground turkey. She also eats dry 'Wellness" grain-free food which I leave out in a bowl. I removed all beef from her diet and then all chicken. She's still itchy. I tried fish oil but it caused diarrhea. I hate to see her so miserable especially when she wakes up at night scratching. I brush her gently when she starts and it gives her great relief. Any suggestions? http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/ima...ser_online.gif http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/ima...ons/report.gif http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/ima...ttons/edit.gif |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I've been there w/ allergies as 2 of mine get irritated with all the pollens here. First, I'll tell you that food allergies account for only 10-15% of allergies, so it's unlikely that her allergies are from food...not impossible, but not likely. Her brown patches may be pyoderma (staph intermedius), so you might want to get a skin scraping from the vet - if it's pyo, she'll need a prescription (usually Simplicef x 30 days) to get rid of it. My Wylie will get pyo a few times a year when he's exacerbated by certain pollens. The way to approach allergies is to first recognize whether they're all year round or seasonal. If seasonal, then you may want to consider giving Temaril P or steroids during the season. If year round, then you consider Atopica and/or allergy testing and shots. My Marcel is on Atopica and it was a MIRACLE for him; he used to wake up at 1am to chew/lick his paws and Atopica stopped that. We also allergy tested him and give him custom desensitization drops so that maybe someday he can go off the Atopica. You also might want to try, in the meantime, OTC meds like Benadryl (rarely works), Zyrtec, or Claritin...all of which are used on Dogs. I like Zyrtec or Claritin bc they work for 24 hours, whereas Benadryl or Chlortrimetron you have to give every 4 hours. Btw, oats can irritate many allergy dogs...maybe switch carbs to something else is worth a try? Allergies are SO frustrating and complex, so I really feel for you. But hang in there, bc you'll find something that works. We finally went to a Vet Dermatologist and they are just AMAZING. Wish I'd gone to them right away rather than wasting so much time and money with my regular vet, sigh. Hindsight, ya know . Here is a thread from our Library that covers allergies in more depth: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/die...tart-here.html

YorkieTalk Newbie! | Savannah/allergies Thank you so much for such a quick response. I will get her an appointment to find out what the patches are. I never thought about oatmeal being a possibility and I'm about to make a new batch of food so I will find a replacement for the oatmeal and see if that makes a difference. Allergies are incredibly frustrating. Thanks again. |

| Allergies can be a real pain to deal with. One of mine gets them very badly. He reacts to any grain & also pollens & some cleaning products. Have you tried potato? I find he does much better on this, with either duck or fish , rather than rice, chicken etc. My vet suggested potato, with either pork or fish, but mine can't do pork without itching. When the pollen count is high I give him over the counter Piriton. |

YT 3000 Club Member | chester has allergies from the enviroment, and can be a very itchy boy, I would take him to the vet and see what they say. YOu can give benadryl and if it helps then it is not food related. Chester gets salmon oil good for allergies, no perfumes or dyes in laundry and no dryer sheets, no plug in air freshners, yorkies cana be a itchy breed thats for sure, but they are worth it |
