| Need food and treat advice I just got our puppy 3 weeks ago and he is 4mos old. His name is Lucky and we are working on trying to potty train him. He is doing really good so far but I need some advice on food from all of you yorkie pros. I give him Purina Puppy Chow because that's what the breeder was giving him and I also give him Zuke's Mini Naturals Moist Miniature Dog Treats-Peanut Butter. I have noticed the last few days his stool has been very soft and he's had a lot of gas so I think it's the food and treats I am giving him. He loves those treats but I don't want to continue giving them to him if it upsets his tummy. I also want to see about dog food because I don't like giving him the cheap stuff. What are your suggestions and if I do switch do I slowly switch him? Any advice and help would mean a lot to me. This is our first family dog (my mom always had dogs and yorkies...but this is our first since I have my own family now) I have been married for almost 15 years and we have a 13 year old son and our youngest son passed away before his 2nd birthday a few years ago and then I had a tumor in my uterus and had to have surgery so we can not have any more kids so my Lucky is now a huge part of our family and our baby. He is so loved and has brought so much joy to our lives again, so any help will mean a lot to us. I am so glad I found this site and look forward to getting to know everyone! Thank you in advance for all your advice and help |

| The zuke's treats are good but now that he is comfortable in your home I would slowly transition off purina, I feed my boys blue buffalo freedom puppy. Mix the new food in with the old. over the course of a week -2 weeks increase the amount of new food until all your feeding is the new stuff. My boys started on purina and once I switched you could see the difference. |

| Go straight to the best quality dog food you can afford. Do your research . Their are so many kinds it'll drive you crazy. I was on wellness for a bag and a half till my little Zoey just stopped eating it, I then went into "topping " overdrive which worked till I could find something better . Get samples from reputable dog food stores and see what it will eat for more than a day. Maybe they don't feel good on chicken, try lamb or there's even brands for sensitive stomaches, or limited ingredients ones. I am on orijen . I sleep with my baby and glad I do because she spent all night restless with these belly Hiccups like she was going to throw but didn't. But she was miserable,or I would have never known. Next day she was off of Wellness. Oh and watch their poop. I've never seen such nice looking poop now ...lol You can tell. Good luck a new puppy will bring such joy. |

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk, and congratulations on your new baby, Lucky. Yorkies truly are our little children, and it is good to know that Lucky is bringing you so much joy. Here is a link to some good puppy foods, on dogfoodadvisor.com: Best Puppy Foods Whatever you choose, don't switch quickly, start by mixing part of the new in with the old, and increase slowly over a week or two. Give him puppy food for at least the first 10-12 months before switching to adult food. With all the recent info coming about toxic treats, make sure not to get any made in China, or from ingredients from China. You could even make your own, and here is a link to some recipes: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...od-treats.html

| Hi and welcome to YT. I'm so sorry to hear of your loss but happy to know that your new puppy is giving you such joy. I would definitely do research on the food & treats on dogfoodadvisor.com. I feed my baby (3 YOA), Milo, Blue Buffalo. I've tried the Salmon & the Bison and now I have him on the small breed red meat which he seems to like better than the other two. He is such a picky eater though. He hasn't been enthusiastic about any of them. As far as the treats go, I certainly agree with the person who says to make sure you feed him NOTHING from China. There's been too much bad news about that. You could buy some raw chicken & cook it & feed that as a treat or make your own treats from some of the recipes listed above. Good Luck! |

| When deciding on a food I first research the company, then I look at the ingredients, then I see if my dog likes it. There are some company's out there that are not good so researching them is very important to me.
