| Average % of Protein For Biewer/Yorkie General question as to what % protein do you keep your yorkie/biewer on? I received a ton of free samples from Artemis and the protein levels vary considerably. Also after JuneBug's seizure scare, his bloodwork came out normal. I feed him kibble right now and is not a picky eater. He has liked most of the samples I have given him. He gets a 1/4 cup twice a day and a treat at bedtime (half a DentaStix). Sometimes I mix it up and will open a can of wet and use as a topper. My vet also told me that some grains in a dog food does not hurt (with the exception of an allergy). His main food is Authority Mini Chunk Adult Lamb & Rice Formula which has a protein level of 22% and a fat content of 12%. He weights about 6-7 lbs. Thoughts and advice appreciated!

| I don't have an answer for you, although I feed June about 30% protein. My vet has told me he is very healthy and a good weight for his size. He weighs 5.5 lbs and I feed him 3/4 of a cup a day (1/4 cup 3x a day). Are you sure 1/2 a cup per day is enough for Junebug, given that he's 6-7lbs? Or am I just overfeeding my guy? Our babies have similar names by the way We call June Junebug sometimes. |

p.s. A Biewer breeder in my area told me to watch his protein intake and to keep it under 28%..there are some treats out there with protein up to and over 60%!!!

| I prefer to stay within the 25%-30% range for protein. It's just a personal preference. I don't want to go lower than 25% but really have no desire to go higher than 30% either. I just feel it gets wasted. Having dry kibble at 42% protein just seems like a waste... and too excessive. They'll probably end up just peeing it out anyway. As far as fat, I won't go over 18%. I prefer a 12%-17% range. For a breed prone to pancreatitis, I don't know, I just don't see a need for any foods over 18% fat. Also, beware of minimums. A lot of foods have 18% "min" fat, and that's not a MAX. So technically a food that says it's a min of 18% could be UP to 22+% etc. You can ask a company if they know their maximums. Jackson is 17lbs, and active, and he gets 1/2 cup per day of kibble, along with wet food, and he gets a Dentastix or a Get Naked chew every night, and some treats throughout the day (Buddy Biscuits low fat). Sometimes I up his food to 2/3 cup per day if he is extra active. This is the condition I like him the best in:

Senior Yorkie Talker | We know when feeding ziwipeak to our female biewer, Shelby, it was a bit to rich for her. Nothing bad happened when she was on the ziwipeak minus some more softer poop. As we found out she was having a reaction from the breeders food (PurinA small dog brand of food). The corn is what she was allergic to in the Purina. However Gus Gus, our male Biewer, was doing super on the ziwipeak. Shelby is now on life's abudance and has been doing much better cause she may need some form of grains in her diet. Gus is now having Evo and loves the kibble. Evo is cheaper and we got free new bags from them because of the last recall. Prayers are sent for your June bug. |

The key is where the protein is coming from. If it is from junk like grains, it is not good. Junebug has been doing well on the Authority Lamb & Rice formula but I do mix it up with some of the many samples I got from Armetis. I do not need to spend tons of money on a grain-free high quality food; not because I am cheap but because JuneBug has been doing well and his stools are perfect.

I have always fed dog food that were around 28% protein. What wet food do you give him?

Those are pretty much the ranges I like to stay within as far as fat and protein go. That is a good point about listing the "min" on the bag...it makes you wonder how much is actually in the food! I'd hope it wasn't too much higher than what they state...kinda misleading if so. | |

I do not have a specific wet that he gets all the time. I do not buy junk but do buy what is on sale at the time. Right now I have a small can of Weruva, Lotus, Hills Ideal Balance, Evangers and Blue Buffalo. The Hill's is like a stew and does not contain carragnan which is a plus.

I usually either feed Weruva wet food or Cesar's (which is "bad" I know) but it's honestly such a small part of his diet (he gets less than a spoonful, just enough to put some water in and mix it up) and it's super cheap... sometimes if I run out of wet food or whatever, and don't feel like going to the pet store, the local drug stores all sell little Cesars tubs for like 70 cents. I've also used the Hills Ideal Balance before too. I try not to use anything too high in fat (even though it has to be converted to dry matter...)
