| When to get puppy neutered? What is a good age for neutering a puppy? Leo is 9 weeks and weighs 3lbs. He's a very chunky/big puppy. He's already starting to hump large stuffed animals.

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | Typically 6 months of age. Some vets will do it sooner but 6 months for male and some wait until after a females first heat. There are some pros and cons about that tho.

| Teddy had a pretty bad humping tendency (he would seriously try to mount Toki when she was getting a drink of water, squatting to pee, or even if she stopped moving for too long) when we first got him but we got it to stop almost completely after only 3 days. We would just interrupt him by giving him a spritz with the water bottle but mostly by just making a noise to distract him and then redirecting. I do feel that the behavior may have been related to or increased from the anxiety of being in a new home and with another dog. Correcting Teddy's humping was done before we got him neutered (he was 10 months when that got done) so I wouldn't rush to neuter your pup just to address this issue. It certainly can lend itself to awkward situations in front of strangers though! |

| At least 12 weeks. I would say before first heat/cycle. I personally am getting them spayed/neutered at 12 weeks.

| I would say 6 months and I would also have the vet pull any baby teeth at that time.

| Is this what your vet recommends? 12 weeks is awfully young...

2+2=4 X the Love ♥ Donating Member | I agree, 12 weeks is too young. Why put such a young pup through that. Plus like Taylor mentioned at that age you know if any of the baby teeth are still present and can do both surgeries at the same time to eliminate the risk of putting them under twice. I would never have it done before 6 months just because I would be scared of the risks involved with the anesthesia.

| I was only recommended this by my breeder. If you have any questions about it or concerns. Your more than welcome to direct it towards Deb Sillers of Amazing Yorkies. As I wouldn't be able to state why this decision is made. Sorry if I offended anyone. I personally am NO expert on this. I was just passing along information from my Reputable breeder. I couldn't imagine her ever giving me wrong information. Especially if it deals with the health of her own pup. Can someone please state facts of why I should not have them spayed/neutered at 12 weeks.? I would love to be pointed in the right direction if this is so. Thanks. I hope it is understood I am also wanting the best for my pups!

I prefer to wait until growth plates are closed, so 8-12 months. Jackson was neutered at 7 months but he too was a larger boy, already 12lbs by then, and almost fully grown.

| Once again. I would like facts rather than opinions. Obviously based on research. That would be very appreciated. So if this is the case. I as well as others can be better informed.

| Pediatric spay/neuters have become more popular with the rescues; I understand why, they want all dogs to be fixed before leaving, understandable. A lot of studies have been done on why early spaying/neutering is not beneficial to a dog at all- including ortho issues, spay incontinence in females, etc. I've honestly never heard of a breeder doing it so young, though, so curious as to why. Most breeders I've spoken to actually want me to wait until 12+ months if I can.
