| Aaaaa! Please help! My yorkie is like hoover! At first would like to say hi to everyone here as is my first post. I have been reading some of great post here on forum for some time and learned a lot from them Until now reading anwsered most of my questions... until now Our yorkie- Leo is 3.5 months old and even should have been pure breed yorkie doesn't look to me like it. He is 8lbs already and still growing. This didn't ring any bells that he may be to big for his age until recent vistit to vet when I was warned that we may end up with 15-20lbs yorkie. He was chubby puppy so I thought he will loose all this baby fat and will be fine.... From beginning we have an issue with food. He is constantly hungry. And I mean it! Would eat anything that stand on his way! He ate all plants and grass in our 50 yard garden, then moved to soil and even stones All insects, snails, slugs, and other yucky things... He was getting 1/2 cup of dry food and was costatnty eating something he shouldn't and begging for more was unbearable. One evening I was cooking and he was as usually begging for food, went to toilet for 1 minute. On my return I found him chewing on pot from mouse poison wchich he found somewhere under kitchen cabinets. We are renting, didin't even know that front panels can be moved not to think about anything like some poison under. So... I didn't know if he ate any and if there was anything there (and as I know him I thought that he had hoovered it within 5 sec) went to vet where he had injection to induce vomiting. I was terrified! 3 weeks ago (when I found out how much he does really weight started to give him 1 full cup a day and still wasn't enough. So we went to vet again yesterday and been told to give him today as much as he can eat, so we know what his portion should look like. Well... I don't think this went according to plan. He ate 5 full cups of dry food today (yes, that much!) so 10 days worth of food for average yorkie of his age!. After 5th cup we decided not to give him anymore as this could actually harm him. But he was still looking for more all day long, even he was barely able to move from his full belly for half day. Did any of you had any problem like that? I am so exhausted of him just eating all day long and watching his every step just in case he eat something like shoes or carpet. I know, he is a puppy and I know that puppies chew on things... This is 3rd puppy I ever had. Leo would shovel shoes for dinner not chew on them for a pleasure of chewing! His eating is dangerous and I started to worry that will eventually harm him (beside that he is already fat). Any suggestions would be hight appreciated before I pull all my hair P.S. Sorry for long vent |

| Yikes, I would be soooo careful as to what he is eating. There are many plants out there that are poisonous to our babies. I would also do a full swoop of your house to make sure all dangerous things that he can get are put up. I would not feed him as much as he can and will eat. You will have an overweight puppy soon enough if you are doing that. He needs to be fed the correct amount. What food are you feeding? For his age/weight/ activity level it should say on the back of the food what the recommend amount is. If the food is a low quality full of fillers, he may not be satisfied. He needs a higher quality kibble, that has more protein and keeps that tummy full. I would also start correcting his behavior. You do not want a puppy that eats everything. You should start teaching him to “leave it” . It sounds like he is bored. I would start training him, having training sessions throughout the day is a great way to reduce energy, bond with him, and teach him a few things. You may also want to walk him more, as well as play with him in general.. help him drain some of that energy.

Also, what type of food are you feeding him? Some dog foods have too much filler and not enough protein that leaves a pup hungry sooner that he should be. Also, rather than just feeding him more kibble, keep him full with healthy snacks like frozen peas, green beans, or carrots. Use these treats as training rewards and they will do double duty.

| I am a bit surprised that the vet suggested to let him eat as much as he wanted....did the vet ever expect him to eat 5 cups?? That's a lot of kibble. I agree with the others about using good quality dog food and using low-calorie (green beans, etc) treats as well. Hope you get it all figured out soon! Good luck.... and enjoy him! |

Senior Yorkie Talker | My Biewer is 10.2 pounds, the breeder said he would be about a 10 and they are correct. For his weight the looks really built, more muscle than fat. We are feeding him and his sister (not biological) Evo now. Slowly regulate his feeding and give him. A carrot or a bully stick to chew on.

| I would take him to a vet school or someplace with specialists like geneticists and endocrinologists. Your vet sounds like he either doesn't have a clue or doesn't care. My dog is also 8lbs and eats a total of 1/2 cup kibble a day, usually less. There is a problem in humans called Prader-Willi Syndrome which is a genetic defect in the hypothalamus which prevents the subject from ever feeling full. I would consider having him tested for hypothalamus issues if this doesn't resolve quickly. Good luck and keep us posted.

| Thank you everyone for great tips and sorry for replying so late ( I was thinking my post has not appeared here). We give him Royal Canin for Yorkie puppies so to my believe is not the worst food out there and should fill him up. Excessive demand for food continues and is getting worse. We decided to go with 1 cup max divided to 3 portions a day and puppy started showing some aggression toward us when we go to kitchen and just ignore him when he is begging. I have been bitten twice already when I told him "no food". Just don't have idea where is this coming from as there is no aggression at our home whatsoever and don't think many dogs have such a stress free life. Love him to bits no matter how big he will be, but all that fuss about eating starting to really annoy me and rest of my family. We even cannot have him near us at dinners and happened few times that he jumped to coffee table where my 3 year old daughter had her lunch and just eat it all. Thank you Marhcarter for your suggestion, I think we will have to have him checked by specialist. It is certain that this behaviour is not normal. I will keep you posted if we find any cause to that or some solution. I hope this will be soon... very soon Now if you excuse me, I will go end rescue my daughters cupcake. Leooooo! Not agaiiiinnn... |
