| When can a puppy have pizzle sticks? According the guesstimated age, Gypsy is 10.5 weeks old. I gave Sprout and Bella a pizzle stick (most know them as bully sticks I guess) this morning, and they are happily gnawing on them. Well, Gypsy got wind of what they had and pitched an absolute fit (howling, screaming, yelping and wailing). I gave her plain yogurt and some pumpkin inside her puppy Kong. She loves it - but not this morning. She's still wailing at me. She's looking at them, and then looking at me, and then at them, and then back to me...like "what gives??" I feel horrible but I honestly didn't think she would know what it was since she hasn't had one yet. She's very upset and doesn't want her own treat - she wants what they have. Is 10.5 weeks too young to gnaw on a bully stick? If not - I'll give her one right away, but I thought little tiny puppies weren't supposed to have them? Should I put Sprout and Bella in another room? Thank you for advice Sincerely, the bad mommy |

| I neglected to mention - I don't care to hear from those who swear up and down that bully sticks are the devil. The ones we get are completely free from bacteria and our dogs have been gnawing on them for years and years (Sprout is 14 years old and has all his teeth and they are all in excellent shape and he's only been sick 1 time in 14 years and it had nothing to do with bully sticks). I'm looking for an answer specifically for the "when" they can start having them, please. I mean no offense, but I have my opinion and my opinion is that bully sticks are perfectly fine if you purchase high-end premium ones that are made properly. They've never made our dogs sick. Bella's been sick...and I did ask the vet about the pizzle sticks but he said "No, that didn't do it." |

I've always given my dogs something to chew on when they were teething. If she wants to try one, and your able to watch her for her 1st, I'd go for it. Cinders had a pig ear at 6 months- it was bigger than she was but she sure enjoyed it! I know I'll hear about that 1! My butcher makes them and sells them, so they're not like the pet store ears. I swear she did as much snuggling with it as she did chewing on it! She was a greasy mess for a few days, but she was happy! ** limit how long she gets to chew it. Cinders would chew and not be hungry if she chewed too long**

| I feel like I have to post my warning. Callie broke a tooth on a bully stick and she had chewed the for many years without any problem then one time wham her crushing tooth not only broke but cracked all the way down the middle. Had to have an extraction as well as stitches where the tooth was extracted. Callie will never get another bully stick. She gets naked chews which are like denta sticks but much healthier. I would be worried with a puppy it might upset there stomachs.

| You're fine. As long as the pup tolerates it, I wouldn't hesitate to give one to a puppy.

YT 2000 Club Member | My girls love them and Tatiana is 6 almost 7 months. She has been chewing on them since I brought her home. I just limit the time they chew on them. Some dogs they might get diarrhea. My girls have not had this issue with bully sticks/pizzles. I too, make sure it is a product of the USA. As with all chew items, there is a danger of choking, breaking a tooth, etc......just give it when you are in attendance!

| She likes it...a lot. However, it did give her a bit of diarrhea, so I gave her pumpkin, which solved the problem within 30 minutes, gosh I love pumpkin for pooches. I took it away and will let her try them again in a few months. |

YT 2000 Club Member | I would think if you just let her have it for 10-15 min. a day, she would adjust to it.

| True, but she is very small (1 lb, 3 ounces) I really don't want her to have to adjust to them when it's not necessary. She's already adjusting to a new home, new furry roommates, new people, new food, etc. So much 'new' for her that I don't want to purposely upset her tummy along with all of that. I'm sure she'll be okay without them until her body has matured just a little more. =D |
