| Diet and Dental Health Hello all, new to the forums here. Before joining i've found tons of useful informaiton. Proud owner of a 7 year old 6lb Yorkie named Lola..love of my life. I know this question has strong opinions on both sides but thought i'd ask the Yorkie owners. I've ALWAYS fed premium kibble to Lola..currently on all varites of ACANA and loving it. Question is..is raw prepared ie (natures instict, Stella and Chewy's, and Instict etc) better for the overall dental health? Now Lola is not a picky eater at all. Right now she eats all varites of ACANA..her treats are carrots, string beans, sugar snap peas, apples and varies fruits and veggies. Just want some opinions about dental health dry kibble vs Raw..and and all responses greatly appreciated. |

| Welcome to yorkie talk! I've never fed raw meat, but there are several members who do. I know they will give you good advice. Can't wait to see pictures of your baby!

| I have a friend that feed raw to her food. Her one year old needs a dental. I believe diet really isn't a huge factor. I have fed the same foods to my boys - one has bad teeth and another beautiful teeth at age almost 13. Good luck!

| Gracie has been eating Stella & Chewy's raw for over 2 years now. She has shinny white teeth and has never needed a dental. She is 3 years old. Holistic vets tend to say that the enzymes in raw keep the teeth naturally clean. They are selling enzymatic cleaners that remove tater from pet's teeth so enzymes must have something to do with it. I do feed my cats a high grade kibble but I give them an enzymatic supplement in their water to help keep their teeth clean. Kibble by it's self will not clean teeth. The enzymatic supplement is supposed to keep their teeth from forming tarter and so far they are all looking good. |

| I think Dental health has a lot to do with genetics. If she does good on her food now I would just brush her teeth and continue doing what your doing. Callie was 5 and she only needed it because she had a problem with a broken tooth and she eats dry food and I brush her teeth weekly.

| All good advice much appreciated. Her body and energy on Acana has been outstanding. Great stools, even reduced eye goop. U fortunately she does not let me brush tried everything I could. Always have her teeth checked and ex rayed as well. Recent trip let to a few extractions due to infections. Just wondering if its the kibble, and Raw prepared would help. The vet insists its not but you never know. Recently bearing champion foods have been causing various issues including teeth, itching, etc. more and more Raw just seems the way to go. |

If you like Acana and your dog does well on it then the added enzymes may help with the issue with the teeth. | |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I feed premade raw and really like it for my kiddos. One theory with raw is that bc the natural enzymes are still present in the meat (rather than cooked out/killed), it helps teeth bc digestion does start in the mouth (for us too). That said, I believe most dental health is determined by genetics....THAT said (lol), all disease including gum disease etc is caused by a combo of nature (genetics) and nurture (lifestyle)...so you can see how it goes beyond simply genetics. I think a very important component of dental health is chewing. I have my dogs use chews about 3-4x a week - I use CET chews (get at Amazon, not at vet), RMBs (raw meaty bones - the BEST for teeth!), Honest Kitchen Beams, and a few other misc chews. My 3 kiddos all come from different breeders and none of them have needed dentals yet - and they are ages 9, 6, and 3....for whatever it's worth.

| What type of raw meaty bones do you give your babies? Do you get them from a grocery store, online, or a pet store? Where do they eat them...are they messy? Thanks! Quote:
