| First time yorkie owner have some questions if i could get some help please We are a first time yorkie owner. we got an 11wk old (dropped off at our house with a not about him but had no name at the time.. I know we were surprised also lol but hes got a home now with us and to us thats all that matters then figuring out who left him). we have a westie/schnauzer mix who I tried a 100% cooked meal with him but he never had solid movements with it to the point where he was barely making it outside. so we have him 50/50 with a holistic dog food (that is grain free etc. since he has allergies). With scruffy we do chicken (boiled bulled from the bone and then what i dont get off the bones i put all that in the slow cooker to make the bones very soft to where they can be mooshed up since im afraid of him choking on them), carrots and peas 5 days a week mixed in 50/50 twice a day with his dry dog food. then twice a week instead of that he gets gets a mix of sardines, salmon (pink Alaskan), and chopped up apples (he loves his apples) dividing between his two feedings. since doing this his coat and allergies to things are at a lower percentage. my question is can a yorkie having feedings like this? and if so can the have salmon and is that to much sardines for them (as for scruffy being a westie fish oil and his skin issues are best friends lol). I've tried doing some research but cant find the answer to my question and Joey (the yorkie our 6yr old and 2yr old daughters named him, our 1yr old son doesn't talk but they already have a bond with each other lol) wants to eat out of scruffy's bowl with him instead of his own so bad (scruffy actually tries to make room so he can its pretty cute ) before I want to let them eat together like this I want to make sure that what/how I'm feeding scruffy is safe for joey since ive had many terriers going up just never a yorkie. (they both get homemade treats since we have newly started an online homemade dog treat bakery... so our dogs are well spoiled lol the kids are too far behind ) I also do have another question along the lines of walking and collars. I was reading that a harness or harness/collar combo is better for this type of breed due to the collaspe issue with the part of their throat. is this true? and are they hard to get use to the leash? how about training (he's not food driven like all the other dogs I have had growing up before getting scruffy as an adult through treat reinforcement then gradually taking that away to get them just to do the things on command)? right now hes at the terrier stage of selective hearing and doesn't seem to care to much about stuff like that just more of cuddling. Should i wait till he's ready/shows signs of being ready or work with him now? and if work with him now since hes not food driven is there some other tactics i can do for reinforcement? thank you for all your help (sorry so long just want to make sure he's at his healthiest with us and we are caring for him correctly, he checked out good with the vet but we dont have any holistic vets in my area to have knowledge about the cooking thing our vet just told us the no no foods for dogs if we were going to give him a mix of people food) |

| welcome to yt and congrats on your new edition to the family.... yes you want to use a harness for everything instead of a collar. most just use a collar for the dog tags. the feedings .....not sure fatty...foods dont sit well with yorkies..and theyre bellies can be very sensitive but the diet ur giving sounds good but are you also giving vitamin supplements? that might be needed for the full nutrition. i feed my green peppers, carrots, and green beans for snacks. toxic to yorkies are grapes, raisins, onions, and garlic top of the list anyway... not sure about the chicken bones as that is something ive never done.

| Yes we have a vitamin that is squirted over the food once a day. I've stopped doing the bones cuz our westie isn't handling them like he use too. I do trim the fat away from the chicken if there is any on the quarters we get. As scruffy doesn't handle to much fat well either off the chicken. I thought of adding rice again with the chicken mix (chicken n veggies) is there a specific type of rice they should have over another? |

| Welcome to YT....I will address what I can address with confidence....I have no working knowledge on raw/home cooked meal...I have always fed my dogs Royal Canin, going thru each specifically designed, age appropriate nutritional formula. There are alot of people here that home cook or feed raw, so you will get excellent instructions in that area. I do make homemede treats and I do make my own dried treats, jerky, with the dehydrator I bought. You are right about what you have learned from your research, about collars. Harnesses are the rule of thumb, in order to prevent any damage to trachea, not only in Yorkies, but any small dogs/Toy breed. If you want to put tags on a collar, most of us will use a cat break-away collar for the tags.....any leash would be attached to a harness and not the cat collar. I love yourappraisal of the "terrier's selective hearing"....that is not a stage, but a characteristic of these special little souls....I think it makes them soooooo endearing and quite a challenge! I do not take my dogs out into public areas, for walks or socializing, but there are many who do. They will be letting you know successful methods of training to do leash work. Congratulations on your baby! You are soon going to be absolutely owned by this baby, as we all are! |

| Another question I had was how much and how often is he suppose to be eating. I read some where 1cup total 3times a day. Joey is 11wks and he maybe eats 1/2-3/4 of a cup total among 2 feedings. I tried the whole 3 feeding thing but he turns his nose up to the middle day feeding and only eats mornings and evenings like our westie. Is this normal or should I keep trying the 3 rd feeding? |

| I read some where that yorkies are suppose to eat 3 times a day at a cup total for the day with all those feedings added up. Is this correct? Joeys 11wks and he only wants to eat in the morning and evening when our westie scruffy does. He maybe eats a total for the day 1/2-3/4 cup. Is this normal? Or should I keep trying that third feeding that he turns his nose up too? |

| That's how our westie is feed but we try not to leave the puppy food down all the time since scruffy would eat it so Joey gets his food plus anytime he feels like going in between feeds and taking a few bites of scruffys bowl |

| Ah, so Joey is getting home cooked food too? If he is eating some of your other dogs' food, maybe he is getting enough. Are you feeding them all the same thing? Keep in mind that a Yorkie's nutritional requirements may be different from your other breeds. I would avoid giving Joey sardines if they are packed in oil, since a high fat content meal could provoke pancreatitis. Leaner fish like salmon (meat only, with fatty skin removed) should be okay. |

| Welcome to YT! I have always fed kibble, so I will leave the dietary questions to others with more knowledge. Yes, a harness is a must due to the possibility of collapsed trachea. My Huey is not food motivated, but he is very treat motivated. Good treats are carrots & frozen green beans and he loves them. I have also heard frozen blueberries are good, but I haven't tried them yet. We also love the occasional piece of peeled apple or bite of banana, and of course, CHEESE! Cheese must be in small quantities, but Huey is a cheeseaholic and will steal and eat a whole plate of it if left within reach. Yorkies not only have selective hearing, they are very smart and devious, but always entertaining. You can look forward to years of entertainment and love. Congrats on your new furbaby, however he came into your lives!

| When feeding a dog 50% of there food being human food you should not do it unless you have talked to a vet nutritionist and are giving the proper supplements. Feeding a dog human food with out the supplements and advise from a vet nutritionist you could actually be hurting your dog more then you know. My worry about someone just dropping a pup at your door step would be what if they stole it and someone is looking for it. Make sure he has a full vet check up. Collars should never ever be used on a small dog except for tags. My yorkie when I first got her I used a collar on her for about a month and she has mild collapsing trachea now and my moms rescue yorkie had been walked on a collar for 5 years until they got him and he has ct and had to go on medicine that he will probably have to take for the rest of his life so harnesses for when your using a leash and collar for tags only but you have to make sure your kids know not to pull on the collar.

| Maybe you could take a look at this website: https://secure.balanceit.com/ I used the site & supplement when I home cooked for my pups. You can generate free recipes based on age/weight/activity level/allergies, etc. I would also recommened a supplement if you pup's diet consists of more than 1/3 of human food. Although the BalanceIt supplement adds a bit of a grainy texture, it smells flavorless. So it shouldn't be an issue for picky eaters. If your Westie has digestive issues, you could look into petdiets.com. You can get a nutritional consultation from Dr. Remillard online. I know that many YT members have had great experiences with petdiets.com & I've used them as well. Also, you could ask your vet about a probiotic to help with digestion. My Morkie takes FortiFlora. To answer your question about types of foods that Yorkies can eat...yes, Yorkies can eat sardines & pink salmon. I would just make sure that if not fresh, they are packed in water vs. oil due to sodium content. My Yorkies love peas, carrots & apples. So I think yours should be okay. I give my pups frozen peas as treats & my puppy loves to chew on frozen green beans. Congrats on your new pup & welcome to YT
