| Swollen Vulva & Piddling Hi I am new here so firstly, hello I wondered if anyone has come across a similar problem. I have a 14 month old, unspayed yorkie. I got her when she was old at 11 months. When I got her, her vulva was quite big for such a small dog and I thought she may have been due into season - but as far as I can tell she still hasn't had a season (unless I missed it). Since I have had her she has always messed in the house during the night, strangely on a bi-weekly basis. One week nothing, the next week 3-4 wees (large and small) and a poo or two. Then the next week, nothing???! Anyhow, 3 days ago during the day she wee'd on the sofa. I put this down to a little bit of seperation anxiety as she isnt really left alone much (does have her neutered husband for company and 3 cats) but I went shopping for 40 minutes. Didnt think much of it really. But last night she wet the bed (she sleeps in bed with me). I woke up at 3am with wet legs and a large wet patch by my knees. She had just done it becuase she was digging on my pillow which is why I woke up (and the wee was still warm). Because it was out of the ordinary and she looked quite worried, I ignored it, changed the bedding etc. When I got up at 8am she had also done 3 wee's in the front room and a poo. Took a urine sample to the vet which has come back clear. I can't help but wonder if this rather large vulva and this wetting is connected. The next stage will be a check to seeing if everything is ok internally. The vet has suggested putting her on antibiotics just in case and also propolyn which narrows the urine 'pipes' to see if this will help. She also does a lot of tiny wees, the size of a coin. She is drinking normally etc. Anyone had anything similar to this? She is happy as anything in herself so no problems there? Thanks x |

| Could be a urinary track infection. Could she be pg.? Hope you can find out why she pees so often. She shouldn't have the run of the house till she's trained, and not sleep with you.

| The vet has eliminated a UTI so far and next step is internal investigation. She is not PG thankfully as I live in a very rural area and thankfully can allow er off lead without the worry of other dogs. I don't consider her as untrained as such as this is a problem with regards loss of control rather than a behavioural issue. With the volume of mess she does at night I think to crate her would stress her because she can't hold the wees and poos, they literally just happen - bit like incontinance I suppose |

| Well you could use diapers, or put her in a large crate with a pee pad. Maybe pee pad training would be best for now until you find out the problem. |

| yes, I might try that . I am just hoping its nothing serious, the poor baby has had a bad start in life (could be a contributing factor) and is settling nicely with me. I think getting her spayed sooner rather than later will be a help as well |

| I will tell you that I got Jess at almost year old and she would do the same. Be great for 6 days then pee on her bed, alot. I tried all the sweet "no no" and just clean it and move on. It kept happening, treat or not. I finally got irritated and I was pretty stern with her. My voice dropped and told her very firmly no no. Even if I didn't catch her in the act, I would point to it and say "No, bad pee pee"! It took a few weeks but it finally clicked and she NEVER pottys outside her crate pad area. So she now has run of the house which I thought would never happen. She even runs down the stairs to go in her potty pad even though she has one upstairs. Sometimes I think like kids they like to test boundaries, and like kids, forget. I would think by now your little one would have been in heat. Jess was at just about 11 months, we got her at the tail end. If she hasn't been maybe that's the issue..Jess just spayed at 15 months. It has def made her more mellow. She sleeps a lot during the day, which she never used to do..I hope you find the anwers, I think it just takes time for them to settle and realize whats what. It took Jess a good 5 months to settle in... |

| I wasn't suggesting a crate. I personally don't believe in them other than the door left off or open, and used as a bed only. I put up an expen attached to both front edge, then put a piddle pad, water & toys. I also covered the crate making it den-like and of course nice thick soft bedding. I then took them outside to pee & play every one to two hours.

YT 2000 Club Member | This what I do with my 6 month terrier/cocker mix pup, she unfortunatly has inherited the cocker "i pee everytime I get excited" gene. So I just buy size 1 baby diapers and cut a whole in the back part for her tail and poo and she can have free run of my house with out pee accidents and she is pee pad trained for her poo.

| Thanks all for your answers, some good insight to similar issues. She has been on antibiotics and the vet has given me anti incontience liquid but I dont think this is the issue and I dont like to give the little girl medicines she doesnt need. I went to bed at midnight last night and she had been to the toilet outside, I got up at 7 this morning and there was 2 big wees and 5 little wees and a poo. I really am leaning more to the behavioural side. Whats interesting is the other morning she had done a wee (she knows its wrong because she wont look at me and gives the wee a wide walk around). I said to her 'no' and pointed - 20 minutes later she had wee'd on my bed I read that they will wee on beds if they dont want you to find the wee because your own scent is so strong there, to them in masks the smell from a ticking off, predators etc which is quite interesting. I think it's time to get tough now and be more firm. I am moving house in 7 weeks and at my current house it is laminate flooring so easy to manage but the new house is fully carpeted (rented). I have been through replacing carpets with my cat who is a piddler indoors and dont want to have to do it again so hard action now (or as hard as you can be with these little cute yorkie faces My male yorkier who is 6 never does anything in the house and I thought this would assist in the training as she copies everything he does but no joy. This morning I let her out for a week, cleaned the front room floor where she had wee and she came in and wee'd on the same spot - got to be beahvioural! What a minx The previous owner never did give a full explanation as to why they no longer wanted it but I am finding out now as I speak more and more to them. Good idea with the crate open and pads etc. I will give that a go |
