| Blue buffalo dog food?? I am currently feeding my baby Iams smart puppy food but I recently heard some terrible things about the company. I wanted to switch her to another food and when looking around I found blue buffalo. It's expensive but I don't mind paying it if its worth the cost. Has anyone tried it and how did it work for you? |

| Meh. I don't feel it's anything special. They're made in like 5 different plants, they've had a few recalls and Quality Control problems. I read a lot about GI and stomach issues on it. Some dogs do very well on it. I just think it's okay and you can find comparable, if not better, foods for a much lower cost.

| Thanks. Have you heard anything about Iams? I mean my dog loves it and it seems like a decent food. I don't know if I should try to switch her or maybe just keep her on it? |

YT 2000 Club Member | Mine have been on BB Freedom and have done well.....normal stools, no stomach upsets. I am now transitioning them to Nutrisca dry kibble. The reason be that it is grain, potato & tapioca free. We are having some issues with itching/scaling. and I have eliminated every thing except food & enviromental causes! BB also doesn't have choices of proteins in their grain free foods.

| BB is a good food, but I don't think Iams is. |

| Huey does great on BB Freedom, and a 4lb bag lasts 2-3 months, so really how expensive is that? Dh spends more on cigarettes in a week than it takes to feed the dog for 6 months on BB...

| I am sure there are pros and cons with all the foods. As a testimony for Blue Buffalo, it has been great for Mandie. She eats it well (which is #1 concern) and I trust the company. She used to have runny eyes so I switched her to the grain free and this worked. Never had any tummy problems associated with it. I, do, add some oils to her diet and she eats carrot sticks and green beans. I think any kibble, alone, needs something to help with fiber/hair/skin needs.

| We have had 3 dogs do well on various types of Blue Buffalo. Toki was on the Small Breed Chicken and Oatmeal for puppies and the Wilderness for puppies. Our Luna did really well on several types of their Wilderness (she was a picky dog too!) and my parents' beagle Mindy did well on the grain-free BB Basics Turkey and Potato (she is a pretty sensitive dog in terms of what you can feed her)...they also had her on the Healthy Weight formula too. It's a good food and easy to find (practically every pet store near me sells it) but I do think it is expensive compared to other similar foods. I highly recommend Fromm, especially their grain-free formulas. I also like Earthborn, Acana, and Now/Go (these brands you won't be able to find in big stores like Petsmart/Petco though). |

| We are also searching for a decent food. Puff's vet doesn't care for BB-she says too many allergy issues. We did use it in the past before we got Puff and our Sheltie and Cavalier did well on it. |

| Just started my yorkie, Goliath on BB life protection toy breed. Tough getting her to switch but she has these dry patches on her back (possibly staph) that my vet says should go away but I was feeding her kibbles and bits dry food and pedigree canned so I thought a better quality food may help. Has anyone ever heard that the bits in toy breed BB are too small for yorkies? |

| Goliath Hi and welcome! Certainly the food your boy is on now is not considered 'good' food, and it is wise to get him off it ASAP. I cannot see how the BB kibble/bit size is too small for Yorkies. It is good food and you could either get a bag and get a refund if your dog does not like it, or perhaps a sample? I suppose you know that it is a good idea to gradually introduce your dog to new food over a week or so to prevent tummy issues? Good luck and I hope you find the optimum food or your guy. Some are very picky and that makes life much more difficult. Last edited by dottiesyrky; 06-03-2013 at 05:22 PM. |
