| What to feed a twelve year old Yorkie? Hi everyone, My name is Milou, I'm new here. I live in the Netherlands and I'm in the proces of adopting a Yorkie from the city pound. He's a wonderful little guy, but as his age suggests, he has a few health issues. He is deaf and most of his teeth have been extracted. He only has the two lower long front teeth and about four molars (don't know if that's the right way to spell it) left. The lady at the pound told me that she feeds him regular dogfood, softened with a little water. From what I've read Yorkies are sensitive dogs and picky eaters. My question to you is, what should I feed him? Thanks! |

| Royal Canin is very popular and easily available to our friends overseas in Europe/Asia. I would like to suggest you either soften the kibble (either the Yorkie specific or the mini adult indoor kibble, which mine actually like better!) with a little warm water, stir it up well and it makes a little gravy, and they love it. I have had my dogs on RC for many, many years...I feed it exclusively, cradle to grave, and have had no issues with it ever. I am so excited to learn they are finally producing a canned food for our dogs! I will be putting my seniors on the canned food just as soon as I can get my hands on it here! |

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk Milou. I'm a new member too but have found this site to be full of really lovely helpful people who not only adore their little pets but are so kind to everybody who joins. I personal feed my little girl raw lamb and beef meat in the evening and dry biscuits in the morning which she just eats throughout the day as she wants. I have water stations full of fresh water both inside and out for both the cat and dog. I'm not a great fan of processed can food as that is what I feed my German Sheppard for most of his life to which he developed stomach cancer. Now I ain't saying that was the cause strickly but I believe it had a reflection on his health.

| Hello Milou! Welcome to Yorkie Talk. First of all, I wanted to say "thank you" for adopting this sweet baby and giving him the chance to live out his senior years loved and safe. You are such a kind and wonderful person. I use to have a senior Yorkie that was missing her teeth. We would add water to her kibble and store it in the refrigerator. I would make enough for two days at a time. Good quality, canned food, is also an option. Your vet should be able to help you determine if he needs a senior food, based on whether he is chubby or lean, and how active he is. Bloodwork can also tell you if he may need a high or low fat diet, depending on how his old kidneys are functioning. Oh, and my sweet Lucy was deaf as well. We taught her sign language (we made up our own signs) for potty, eat, sit stay, etc. At night I would flip the lights off and on to tell her I was home, or get her attention. It was perfectly fine living with a deaf dog. Just be mindful not to come up behind the dog and pick him up quickly. It will startle him badly. I did this to Lucy a few times, and it really seemed to upset her. We hope you'll post pictures of your new addition soon. Best wishes to you both!

| I tried to post a picture, but it won't work. Anyone curious can click this link: https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?f...6&l=7a1b057cc8 I went to the vet the other day and he told me that he doesn't recommend canned food because it has too much salt added and it's bad for his liver, kidneys, and stomach as well as the remaining teeth. He recommended Eukanuba or Royal Canin, the adult variety, because he is very busy and bouncy. According to the Humaine Society he grew up with 15 cats, and the little fella is convinced he is a cat. This means he's bouncy and jumping on all he can jump on. KimInMD: How did you correct Lucy when she was naughty? |

| Now that is very difficult decision to make, you both are absolutely gorgeous in the photo. The little fella doesn't look too old either. Hope you are all settling in well. I use a raised stern voice with Trixie and then a cross looking steer at her and , boy, she knows when she has done wrong.

| My problem is that Chip is deaf, and doesn't hear a thing. Therefore I must have physical contact in order to let him know I'm not happy with his behaviour. I don't want him to associate my touch with punishment though. |

| Oh, yes that is an issue then, sorry, I hadn't realized Chip was deaf. Maybe a firm stamp of your foot on the floor to attract Chips attention then the stern look . Hopefully there will be better advice from the members here soon.

| Pretend you don't want Milou on the sofa. Make your "no, no" hand sign, and sign it sternly, along with an upset look on your face, immediately followed by removing him from the sofa. If he doesn't try to get back up on the sofa, then sign your "good boy", with a happy face, followed by petting. He will catch on to your signs, and you will catch on to his very quickly. Have you started the new food? Is Milou doing well with it?

| Congrats on taking in an older dog. Such a nice looking pup. They give so much and ask so little in return. Zipp was 15 when I rescued/adopted him. The folks on YT will be able to give you a lot of good advise. Zipp had all his teeth so he had no problem eating dry and wet foods, and anything that may have dropped to the floor. He had bad cataracts, almost blind and that's what did him in, pool. Best wishes with Chip. Keep us updated.
