| Expressing...AGAIN! I just had to take Blake in yesterday to have his glands expressed. This makes twice in the month that I've had him. I've been giving him the canned pumpkin to help, the vet says the food I have him on is not the problem...since he's 14 weeks, I'm wondering if this will get better? |

| well i can tell you i got lola at 4 1/2 years old and for the first 6 months or so she was with me she had to be expressed monthly, bi monthly. it was stress from a new home, sibling dogs she didnt trust yet and not yet trusting us. so i realize you have a puppy but maybe its the stress of the new home environment causing this. i hope other will chime in...i just know once lola trusted and became more comfortable in our home we havent had to have them expressed by the vet like in the beginning......

| Firm stools assist in expressing the anal glands....how is his poop? Is it soft, soft formed, or firm? Just a thought..... |

The peas gave him the firmness and bulk he needed to express his glands naturally. He has never had them manually expressed since that time. I stopped giving him the peas at about 1.5 years old.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Honestly, I would change the food - despite what the vet says. What are you feeding him now?

| I agree, change food. Anal gland issues are often caused be allergies & very well could be a food allergy. |

| I have never had to do Lola's and she is 2 and a half, so I am curious what were the signs you saw that made you or the vet know this had to be done. Lola almost never scoots and 99% of the time has what I would consider good moderate to firm stools.

| I have never had the Anal Gland problem with Oscar but my Shih Tzu used have to go to the Vet every 30 days and have it done.. I could tell when she needed to go because she would lick herself constantly.. My Vet advised me to try a different food. I tried several different brands and she does great on a grain free limited ingredient with chicken or turkey.. Lamb and Fish seem to bother her so I stay away from those ingredients.. Kaiah has not had to go to the Vet for Anal Glands for almost a year.. Of course all dogs are different so this may not be a solution for everyone |

Scooting, esp on carpet or rough surface is the most obvious. But some dogs will suddenly start licking themselves around their back half. It may not be in the spot you would expect, either. My little female yorkie would lick her abdomen. I didn't "get it" at first and she ended up licking herself raw so I took her to the vet to find out what was wrong. I was ashamed I'd missed her distress, but after that I knew what to watch for. If you're concerned, next time you're at the vet, ask them to check Lola's glands. The need for having glands expressed is quite variable. I feed both of my dogs the exact same diet. One has never had a problem, the other one needs his done every 3 weeks or so. | |

| If I ever want to get Jackson's expressed, all I have to do is bring him to the vet, or groomer, or some other 'scary' place. The moment he walks in, he expresses them (out of fear/anxiety) LOL... crazy dog.
