I am a new Yorkie Momma and a newbie to Yorkietalk as well. I am looking fos advice for you more experienced Mommas. I have two yorkie puppies .. they are nearly 15 weeks old, Pixie being a day older than GI Joe. I am feeding them Hills Science Diet Puppy dry nuts. On the pack it says 55 grams per day for each puppy. I am splitting this into three feeds per day (am I doing the right thing?). The other worry is that Joe seems to have a problem and I'm not sure if it's hios diet ... he passed total jelly mucus during the night on the puppy pad .. he did have a very small slice of banana and a taste of icecream yesterday. Other than that it was just his feed and water. Can anyone give me advice please as I am worried about him and don't know what to do for the best. Pauiline x

Hello and welcome!! I believe 55 grams is ¼ of a cup. I could be wrong. I’m not sure on Hills, but for Peanut’s dog food it says for his weight/ age/ activity level it tells me to give him ¼ of a cup total.. On the back of your bag it says to give one puppy 55 grams total?

It is OK if you split the total amount of food up for, but you just have to make sure the puppies are getting enough food.

Have you ever taken the pups to the vet? The jelly mucus poop could be a bacterial infection, intestinal parasites, change in diet… it would be best to take your pup into get an exam.. if you can taking a poop sample would be great!

Welcome! If you could take a stool sample to the vet they should be able to tell you if it is something that needs treatment. I know mine get upset tummy's from dairy so it's possible the ice cream didn't agree with him. I'm not sure with the food amount but if they are gaining weight it may be the right amount.

I fed Max in 3 meals per day when he was a pup (and he never let go of lunch, so we still do it

). He was 3 pounds at that age and ate 3/4 cup a day of a 380 calorie/cup food.

I agree that the treats may have caused the jelly stool. If it happens again, definitely consult your vet.

Thank you so much for all your advice. I did give the puppies natural yogurt yesterday, so maybe that could be the answer. I have made an appointment for a new vet who knows more about small animals than the vet I am with, who freely said he knows very little about small dogs. They mainly deal with cows and horses but have opened a small animal clinic. I weighed their daily food allowance before I replied to you all. Yes it is 55 grams with is 1.9 ozs per day .. I hope this help

Yogurt isn't bad, if it is in moderation. However some dogs just can't tolerate it.. yours may be one of them. I would maybe just give him his dry food until you are able to see what is going on with his tummy. I have a very sensitive little guy so anything I give him has to be in small amounts.. sometimes if he eats a crumb on the floor he will get a tummy ache!

My goodness but don't they have very sensitive tummies! It was two teaspoons of yogurt I gave to each puppie and will not again until I learn more about how they both react to foods. I will only feed them their Science diet until I find out what I should be doing .... the new vets hopefully will put me on the right road tomorrow .... It seems that one of the puppies is more sensitive than the other. Joe is the heavier of the two puppies, so I am surprised. Thanks for all your advice. Pauline

I really hope it's not something serious. I have done right by the puppies. They are microchipped and registered. They have been wormed and de-flead since I got them too. The vet did check both of them but I'm not sure what to think of the vet. He told me to give 1.5 mls of Multivitamin and Minerals to each puppy. It poured out of them from their back paqssage as soon as they got it! I read the instructions to conform what the vet said unfortunately too late ... but it said .5 ml for eacy puppy. I can tell you I was shocked, as I trusted the vets advice. This made me start thinking of changing the vet at least until they are stronger ... and more settled!

I'm hoping it was just the ice cream and that it's temporary. Ice cream is a definite no-no! By that age, your puppy could be lactose intolerant and maybe you saw the symptoms of that.

As far as feeding goes, my puppy is the same age as yours, and I keep food available in her bowl all day. I do keep an eye on the total amount I give her (about a half cup per day, but I suppose that can vary depending on the brand you are feeding), just to be sure she is eating enough during the day, and she is. While they are young and growing, you don't need to restrict their food, and 55 grams seems like too little for a full day at that age. And of course, always keep water available at all times during the day.

Please keep us posted and let us know how Joe is doing!

I went to measure the grams with the cups I have here. Here goes ... 55 grams is measuring a heaped 1/2 cup so what I am actually feeding the puppies is a heaped half a cup divided by three for each puppy ....
Cup measures are not the usual measure here but I have a set of cup measures thank goodness! I will of course let you know how the vet goes tomorrow and thanks again .... love Pauline , Pixie and GI Joe

Oh, okay, a half cup sounds like it's enough at that age. Here is a good article on lactose intolerance in dogs, just in case the vet thinks that is the problem. I was surprised to learn that yogurt contains lactose, too!

Is It OK to Give a Dog Milk or Dairy Products?
