| Enzo had a Vet visit Just had Enzo at the Vet for a check u only because we just got him 2 weeks ago and I wanted some reassurance that everything was good. Although I didn't get the warm and fuzzies from this new Vet, he did say Enzo is healthy. They clipped Enzo's nails, or I guess taught me how, which by the way, Enzo hated! Please any suggestions on how to make it stress free for BOTH of us would be appreciated In addition he mentioned his top gums were a bit red, I'm not sure what kind of dental routine his other owners had, but same thing....any and all tips for teeth brushing please! Lastly, they told be Blue Buffalo wasn't really the greatest puppy food for him, and sent me home with the Vet brand... Hill I believe. Please spred your knowledge and help me!

| Hi, about dog foods, it sounds like your vet is trying to push the brands that he carries. There is an excellent website called Dog Food Advisor that has independent reviews and recommendations for most dog food brands, and Hill's Science Diet for Puppies gets only 2 1/2 stars (not recommended) out of 5 stars. Blue Buffalo Basics for small breed puppies and Royal Canin for Yorkshire Terrier puppies get 3.5 and 3.0 stars (recommended) respectively, and that is what I feed my Bella. Bella prefers Royal Canin because of its smaller kibble size, but unfortunately, I have a bag of Blue Buffalo (larger kibbles) she needs to finish up, so I mix the two foods. Here is the website for Dog Food Advisor: Dog Food Reviews by Brand About brushing, my vet recommended that I wait until the adult teeth come in before I start thinking about that, so I've been putting it off . If the vet saw red gums, they should have made a recommendation about what to do about that. If they didn't, call them back and ask. For nail clipping, our vet did the clipping in about 30 seconds or less using the guillotine-type clippers. I was told that if your dog gets a lot of outdoor walking on concrete, that the nails will get worn down sufficiently and that nail clipping might not be needed. So far, so good, but I have a set of guillotine clippers ready for just in case. |

| Oh, and for getting the puppy used to nail clipping (and grooming in general), take time to gently play with its paws each day, and brush your puppy daily with a pin comb, and bathe once per week. The puppy shouldn't be taken to a professional groomer until after the last series of puppy vaccinations at 16 weeks (including rabies). |

| Thanks for all the wonderful info, I appreciate any and all!I should of mentioned Enzo is already 7 months old, we are his second family, so we are starting at the beginning but not with a baby baby. Like I said, I'm not warm and fuzzy with this new Vet, so I'll be doing a bit more research.

| Had Enzo at the vet on Monday and ever since he's had a touch of the runs?He seems fine otherwise. Do I just mix alittle cooked rice with his food to settle his tummy?

You might try plain canned pumpkin. It has always worked on mine when they have upset tummies. A little cooked rice shouldn't hurt. BTW, did you change his food? If so that may be the cause of the upset tummy.

| Even though you aren't feeling "warm fuzzies" from your vet - the big question is how thorough and competent was he? Did he do a thorough exam of Enzo, checking him for possible health issues? Did he give take time with you to answer your questions? Given the choice, always go with a thorough vet who spends time with me than a warm fuzzy one who blows me off. It could be that the vet just wasn't having a warm fuzzy day |

With that being said, Toki is currently eating Hill's Ideal Balance and also doing really well. There are certain Hill's/Science Diet formulas that I prefer over others but you really just have to pick something that your dog does well on. My vet also recommends Hill's or Royal Canin just out of default because she knows it's something she's seen tons of dogs do well on. She's never pushed those brands on me though and only recommended them when there was a medical reason to do so and we needed a Rx food. As for the nail trimming, at over 1 1/2 years, that is still something I haven't ever successfully done. It's my fault entirely since I'd rather pay for someone else to do it quickly instead of getting into a wrestling match with Toki lol She seems fine when the pros grind her nails but is not a fan of me doing the job...she takes my treats and bolts off! Good luck with your pup!
