| Why so teary eyed? Mia is 5 months and from the day we brought her home, she has always had watery eyes that cause the hair around her face to be wet almost all the time. The only time that her face isn't wet from the tears is when she wakes up. Her hair is perfect when she wakes up, why won't the tears go away? Is the hair just getting into her eyes? Should I cut it or leave it to grow??

| I wouldnt cut it The short hair does get in the eyes and make them tear. You can try giving her gerber water or distilled water it is said to help

| Teething can cause watery eyes. Does she still have adult teeth coming in? If you cut the hair, you have to keep it trimmed, which may be a weekly job. Growing it out can be frustrating until it is long enough to go into place. I used a tiny bit of Vaseline on Max's mustache when we were growing out his hair. It wasn't pretty, but it worked and I didn't have to worry about it getting in his eyes. Use topknot gel for the hair above the eyes. There are many other factors that can cause tearing including environmental and food allergens, or water sources.

| Could be teething, hair, allergies, even genetics. I have baby terry cloths that I use to wipe their eye boogers every morning. Momo has a very short snout, so I have to keep his hair trimmed around the area between his eyes to keep it from poking him. His eyes have been very watery the last few weeks, so I'm constantly wiping them.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Distilled water helped Joey when he was teething. We have very hard water in Phoenix and for some reason too many minerals can cause eye tearing, especially if they are teething. You can try buying a gallon of Gerber's water for mixing with formula. If you buy other distilled water, make sure it says "Safe for drinking." I could tell the difference in one day, and if my husband gave him regular water, I could tell that in one day too!

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Yes, bottled water can have as many minerals as local tap water. Bottled water is usually just filtered water and filtered water just takes out "contaminants" such as pesticides and other things like fluoride and chorine. It doesn’t remove minerals. Water that is purified through distillation or reverse osmosis has the minerals removed. Some companies put a few minerals back for taste. I would test Joey monthly on tap water and around the age of 1 year I was able to use regular tap water without any tearing. He hadn't had any tearing until we did a food switch and that affected his eyes really bad. We switched back, and his eyes are good again. Some people swear by the distilled water for older dogs as well, I guess it just depends on the dog and your local water.

| The Nursery Water/Gerber water helped Deuce. No stains. I clean his eyes every 1 to 2 days and no problem. I also let his eye hair grow out so no eye poking.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | This really made a difference with my rescue, his previous owner cut his hair once a week, but that wasn't enough, growing it out really helped.

| I have been putting a few drops of ACV in Huey's water and that seems to have helped immensely with the eye goobers. I also changed his food to BB freedom, but the addition of the ACV seemed to be the turning point.
