| Not Chewing Their Food hello!! My 6 month old yorkie threw up today and I noticed that it was ALL unchewed pieces of kibble. Does anyone have some ideas of what I can do to encourage her to properly chew her food? I'm doing all the basics (Adding water to her food, taking her food away while she's eating then giving it back after she's chewed & swallowed) Love all the unique ideas on this site! |

| Dogs swallow a lot of the kibble so I'm not surprised to hear there was unchewed kibble thrown up. Is this the first time it's happened? If it happens next meal, I would strongly urge you to take her in to your vet. What are you feeding her now? Is it new/were you feeding her something else recently?

| this isn't first time it's happened, but it hasn't happened in a long time. she had been taken to the vet for her throwing up and the vet said nothing is wrong with her, she just has a sensitive stomach. she usually eats raw food from a local organic dog food store. I tried to give her Royal Canin a few days ago and she threw it up tonight, I think she just eats too much too fast and that causes the food to be difficult for her to digest. (yes the RC was introduced slowly) I take care of Kinsley as if she was my baby and I honestly do not think another vet trip is needed, I would take her if I felt it was necessary for sure. All I need help on is ways to encourage her to eat slowly and chew her food properly, she is perfectly healthy so her health isn't a concern at all |

| My baby used to do that. What worked for me was buying the original size kibble instead of the small bites. Then she was forced to chew it. I would also not wet it. It makes it easier for them to swallow without chewing. I don't think a vet is needed. Good luck! |

| Does she throw up when you feed her raw? If so, are the chunks of meat large or cut up small? Regarding eating slower for kibble, there are "devices" that help. They look like this: Amazon.com: DuraPet Slow Feed Dog Bowl Size:... I have NO idea if they work or not though, but it may be worth a shot. Just make sure you get a small bowl appropriate for her size/amount of kibble. Another suggestion is to sit with her when she eats and put down food slowly, 2-3 pieces at a time (depending on how much you feed her).

| Our Hansel inhales his food. He hasn't thrown up but someone suggested we put a tennis ball in his dish so he has to eat around it and that does slow him down. I just can't imagine inhaling his food can be any good for him. LOL Good luck, I'm sure you will figure this thing out.

| No chew My dog does the same and I mostly solved the issue by getting the small bites rather than the large kibble. However, it is probably made worse if the dog has a tum upset or sensitive digestive system. As for the special bowl, it made no difference - for him anyway! Good Luck, it is hard when your baby has issues. Hope he improves soon. |

| If she's used to eating raw, she probably won't chew on her kibbles. You can teach her the 'chew' command. Give her one kibble, say the word 'chew'. If she doesn't chew, don't give her anymore right away, wait about 30 secs to a minute & try again. If she chews, praise her. They pick it up pretty fast. Momo inhales his kibble & ignores my 'chew' command (loll), so I have to soak it in hot water to make it soft. They get canned food for breakfast & kibble for dinner. Also, @ 6months old, they're still teething, so that might be bothering her & cause her not to chew on the kibbles.

| she is teething, lost all her front teeth and I'd say 90% of them have grown back in, she has had a sore mouth lately though she did not chew her food prior to that though, she has eaten kibble before I put her on raw and never threw up full pieces of kibble! when on raw I cut the meat pieces fairly small, small enough for her size but large enough so she was forced to chew. I will give all these suggestions a try! She loves Royal Canin so much and I know it's good for her so I'd love it if she would just slow it down! |
