| this is a weird anal gland question and... I feel kind of stupid asking it but.... Ruby had the raunchiest breath for the longest time. She recently had her anal glands expressed (omg what an experience) but soon after that I've noticed her breath is now fine. Part of the reason I knew she needed the glands done was that she was scooting and biting/gnawing at her back end. Would that have caused the nasty breath????

| Mine get constipated, or are reluctant to make a potty when their glands are full. I think it may be painful? I can see where that could give them stinky breath.

| Bad breath is often an indicator there is a medical or dental issue.

| Wow that is crazy! Never thought of that. Peanut needs his anal's done like once a month or like a month and 1/2. How are Ruby's teeth looking? Can you see any tarter?

| I find this VERY interesting...Princess has very clean teeth & sometimes she has poopie breath. Vet didn't seem concerned @ all, never thought that it can be anal gland problem! She rarely needs it expressed, but when she does, Mimi will be there licking her bum ewww loll. Oh & she doesn't eat poop, so I know the poopie breath is not from that loll.

| Now that Ruby had her glands expressed...she no longer licks back there like she used too and her breath smells just fine. She has a visit w the vet and to get her teeth checked but im 99.9% sure that smelly breath was from the glands!

| This is good to know... When do they start having their anal glands expressed? I was reading some information about it at the groomer, but they didn't do it with their puppy cuts. Camrey will just now start getting fully groomed since she is over 6 months old. Is it just routine to have it done or do you start at a certain age?

From what I gather from the info I have seen, most dogs will express their own glands when they poop. Some dogs don't and those are the ones that need them expressed. I've had three yorkies and Ruby is the only one I've had that done too. I noticed her licking and kind of gnawing at her back end. She was also scooting her butt and I was pretty sure it wasn't worms.

| I know it is time for Kiki to have her glands done. We have an appointment Friday but tonight I notice poop stuck around her butt. She has been dragging her butt a lot today. After getting her cleaned up I notice she is a little red and swollen in the anal area. Is this just the glands or maybe the clean up?
