| Help - Post surgery concerns Anyone that could help with suggestions would be appreciated. My one year-old Yorkie recently had a bowel obstruction and had emergency surgery to correct the problem. She handled surgery well but four days postoperative she had a few episodes of seizure like activity. I have been warned of the liver shunts and have her scheduled for testing this Monday. But, over this weekend she has just acted very odd. She appears to be hypersensitive to sound and very nervous. She is lethargic and seems depressed. She will not eat nor drink and this is progressively getting worse each day. She was overly playful immediately following surgery and that has declined each day. I am very concerned about her not eating. I've tried all types of food: rice chicken beef. She's not interested. Is this typical post operative behavior and do I just need to give her time to heal? |

| I've never had this happen and maybe I over-react but...our babies are so little and when they go downhill they can do so quite quickly. I would call your vet and/or bring her in just to make sure. Im hoping my post will bump yours so others with more experience then I can see and respond...good luck!!! I just reread your post...with the lack of interest in eating and drinking I would definitely bring her in.

| I would call the vet asap. Maybe her over playfullness right after after did something or she is reacting to medication. Could also be shes just sore and sometimes they dont feel it until after the pain pills and medication wear off. Mine just had leg surgery which is def different but her food/water habits didnt change. The surgeon told me to call right away if she wasnt eating or drinking. If she has a fever even more reason to bring her in.. I hope your babys okay and keep us updated. |

| Hi there. I'm so sorry to hear that she had to have surgery but so happy to hear she came thru it ok. It's good that you are taking her in tomorrow to get tested. If she doesn't improve today, I would take her on in to the ER Vet I'm not really experienced in post surgery stuff (other than spays/neuters). I would say that it's not normal for her not to eat or drink at all. That is something that can keep her from healing and cause her to go downhill fast. Make sure she is drinking. She has no choice. Get a medicine dropper or syringe and force it if you have too (angle towards the front of mouth..my lesson learned..so she doesn't drown/choke). Get some unflavored, clear pedialyte. Food is important..keep trying things (hand feeding may help). If she won't eat chicken and rice, try drizzling some of the chicken broth on her kibble. If that doesn't work, just keep trying things until you find what she will eat. Wouldn't hurt to supplement with nutrical if you have any..? And, definitely get her into the vet tomorrow - he/she will be able to help.

| We are staying a couple miles from hospital in hotel tonight since we have a 1.5 hr drive home. I will monitor Bella tonight and be close if I need them. She will see the internal medicine specialist tomorrow. I'll keep you posted. Thanks. Gwen & Bella |
