| Luxating Patella-Surgery??? Hi there, My little man Rolfie is just over 2 and weighs 1.5 kilos... I took him to the vet tonight for his booster and as the vet was checking him over he diagnosed him with a level 2 Luxating Patella on one side. It doesn't seem to be causing him any discomfort but the vet described the effects it could have at a later date... He said they can operate and the earlier its done the more successful it's likely to be as the cartilage will be in better condition as once that's worn away its gone. I've read threads but most of them say their dogs are limping or showing signs of discomfort... Rolfie isn't, and reading the reports saying that their digs were worse after the op put me off as he's ok at the moment! People are suggesting glucosamine... I'm really unsure whether to do that or go for the surgery while he's young and before it gets too bad?? Another worry is when he was castrated he was a sorry little sight after the anaesthetic!! The vets even rang us up in the eve to check how he was... Just worries me putting him under unnecessarily!! Sorry to ramble!!! Thanking you in advance for your response!! Cassie xx |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Welcome. Cali is almost 8 and has had grade 4 lp in both knees for many years. She does very well so far with it. She has a mild liver condition so my vet doesn't like to put her under unless absolutely necessary. Then my Pixie, 7, a few years ago walked off my bed and aggravated her LP. SHe had grade 3 in one knee and grade 2 in the other. After several opinions and one from the orthopedist I decided to have the surgery. She was having a difficult time with her knee. She did very good with it. I wouldn't rush into surgery if it was me without a second opinion from a board certified orthopedist. My vet said she has seen dogs live to 14 with grade 4 and never need surgery. This is just my experience with it. I am glad you are looking into it before making a decision especially since he had problems after his neuter. Keep us posted.

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | I'm no expert, but if I were you I'd get a second opinion from another vet. And before doing surgery, I'd get the opinion of a board certified surgeon for sure. My 3 year old has had Grade 1 LP since she was a pup, and it hasn't slowed her down at all. My vets have all told me not to worry about it now and that it may never be a problem. But again, I'm no expert.

| Thank you for your replies! I don't want to get a few years down the line and kick myself for not getting it done! I have been thinking about a second opinion but need to research how I can get to see an orthopedist / board certified surgeon. Rolfie wasn't from a planned litter, his mum is pedigree and her owners rescued another yorkie (male) and thought they had kept them apart until they got him castrated... They didn't! And Rolfie was the little runt of the litter... He has a gorgous little underbite and now a dodgy knee the poor little mite! So we don't really know of his background too well! I will look into a second opinion. I want what's best for my little monkey!! Xx |

| Go to an orthopedic surgeon to get a better opinion. My Zada had a grade 4 without limping and the regular Vet. said she needed surgery, so I agreed. He did both knees. Big mistake. He didn't even deepen the shallow grooves the caps sits on and she ended up needing surgery on one knee because she was limping. I took her to the orthopedic vet. for her second surgery, and he said she should have not had the first operation unless she was limping. He checked my second Yorkie and found she also has a grade 4, but didn't need surgery. Then 3 years later she tore a ligament and had surgery on it. She's 8 years old and maybe never need LP surgery, but we are watchful! Good luck with your baby.

| Buster was a grade 3/4 on both his back legs. He was only limping on one so his Orthopedic Surgeon only operated on that leg and said to wait until the other caused him issues. Two years later we have still not had the 2nd knee done. With a grade 2 I would definitely consult with an Orthopedic Surgeon for their opinion. I always prefer to have a specialist for any big procedure as they have more experience and these babies bones are so small and I always worry about anesthesia so better the Board Certified Specialist. Buster did great with the surgery, anesthesia, and recovery. Good luck and best wishes.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Given it's a Grade 2, I'd be likely to get a 2nd opinion and wait a while. You may want to give Cosequin RS as a joint supplement. It's one joint supp I know of that actually has *real* studies behind its efficacy claims. It may help prevent some further deterioration, or slow it a bit.

| Callie had the surgery done because her ACL was tearing as well and it's a lot of pain for them so personally i would not do it if the dog is not having pain and problems. If you are really or tied about it though I would talk to an orthopedic surgeon about it.
