| Dry Skin & Itchy In general I thought dry skin was from over bathing. I try to only give her a bath every two week. But even then her skin is dry and flaky. She doesn't have fleas and rarely goes outside so I don't know what is causing her scratching. I see other give baths more often so I don't know. Advice please!

| It could be a few things. First and foremost, what are you feeding her? When she does get bathed, what shampoo and conditioner are you using? Are there grains her food? Grains can cause adverse reactions. Immediately switch to shampoos and conditioners with oatmeal in it. Something else that may help is adding a smidge of natural Apple Cider Vinegar in her water. All of the above have helped Zeus with his itching.

| What about coconut oil/flakes? I think it has some benefits in it for dry skin.

| I just have to ask, do you rinse the shampoo off real good? Left over shampoo residue can be so very itchy for them & flakes off like dandruff. If you do rinse very well, then maybe a trip to the vet. They can do a skin scrape/ cytology to determine what's causing the itchies. FYI, if she's allergic to grains (particularly oats), then an oatmeal shampoo won't help, she'll be allergic to that as well.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Where is she scratching, specifically? Definitely check her skin ALL OVER - neck (front and back), behind ears, inside ears (also, do ears smell funny?), armpits, paws, tummy, inside back leg fold, entire back (part all the fur in various places), back of hind legs. You want to look for any discoloration, black spots, irritation, red blotches. If you see any of that, you need to go the vet to rule out an infection of some kind. Does she itch a lot? Or just blah blee, here and there, no biggie. If it's a lot and if you judge it to be affecting her quality of life...then it's time to consider taking steps and thinking about Atopica, Temaril P, steroids, allergy testing / shots. You could also first try some OTC antihistamines like Benadryl, Claritin, Zyrtec. It's helpful to track pollens in your zip code by going to pollen.com - you can get daily emails that tell you what the pollens are and their level. That may help identify some irritants.

| Has she been vet checked? Could be allergies, thyroid, etc. Buddy my golden has a severe reaction with hot spots and hairless to just 1 flea or tick bite.

| We have an appointment with her groomer Saturday morning and she has been in business for over 20 years I'm going to let her see and get opinions and vet is next step!
