| What should I feed my 3 month old Yorkie? I've been researching puppy food for days. My yorkie is coming home on Wednesday & today I'm going shopping for my new baby! The breeder suggested Purina Pro Plan Toy Breed Formula. She says she's been using this brand for years & hasn't had any problems. However, I am not impressed by the ingredients at all. I'm considering switching to a brand like Blue Buffalo or Wellness. I really don't want to harm my new puppy, so what should I do? Also, I'm worried my new puppy won't eat if I switch up his food. What is the best way to transition to a new food? I'm very concerned. I really want to keep him healthy! |

| I have my 5 year old on Canine Caviar. I think it is a great food- and Peanut is doing outstanding on it. I never seen him look and feel so healthy! http://www.caninecaviar.com/ I would try to find something grain free, stay away from bi-products, and corn. P.S Welcome to YT!

| There are several good puppy formulas from good companies. You can also go with an all life stages food with small kibble. We used Nature's Variety Prairie foods when our dogs were puppies. They now make puppy formulas too. We feed Horizon Legacy and Fromm now. They have puppy formulas too and are very good foods and very good companies. You can also look into Acana. Blue Buffalo is decent food and has puppy formulas. My son swears by Blue Buffalo for his dogs.

| As much as I HATE purina the pup needs to stay on what it is used to for a while sense everything else will be scary and changing.

To transition/convert your pup to a new dog food, begin by adding a small amount to the food she has been eating then after a couple days, add more. You can increase the amount of the preferred food easily this way and your pup should be happy. I know Yorkie's can be finicky eaters but we haven't had any problems with our Princess Sophie. Good luck with your transition and oh yes, welcome to YT and congrats on your new baby. Glad you are here! Post picts when you can please. We love picts.

| I couldn't agree with this any more! I made the mistake of trying to switch over to a new food too soon, and it's still a headache a month later.

| I agree with Taylor. There are lots of good food out there. A sudden switch and a 180 life change all at once can be stressful. I'm sure there are some pups out there that manage well and some just don't. I'd rather be cautious personally, and transition food. I've heard really good things about Wellness and Blue Buffalo from other YTers.

| The breeder should send you home with food. If you are not happy with the food I personally would change it. You can do a slow transition so there is not affect on him- half the time they pick out the new food and leave the old anyway. I wasnt happy with what Peanut was eating so I changed it- nothing happened, he was perfectly fine.

| First let me say By no means do I really know anything about dog food. But I found this website What’s Really in Pet Food Which made me think it is all just gross. We chose blue buffalo for our puppy at 6 weeks. After about a week of transisitioning from the purina the breeder gave us he started having loose stools. But After another week or so they firmed up except he would go 5/6 times a day... (sometimes probably more than that I'm not kidding) and he doesn't eat very much. So I got to reading and turns out alot of people have trouble with blue buffalo causing diarreah. That made me think that the frequency of his going maybe was caused by the food and I decided to switch. I think blue buffalo is a very good quality food and some dogs do very well and some do awful. After reading like you are for about a week I finally decided on switching to wellness Core based on the fact that they use pepole grade food rather than wastes and my only complaint so far is that transitioning him is impossible because from day one he would pick out all the bits of wellness and leave the rest. I'm actually thinking I will have to throw away the blue buffalo cause he won't touch it. He now poops twice a day! |

| What a great idea... I honestly never would have thought of that. Although there is such a tiny bit of it left maybe 1-2 cups and some of it is mixed with the new wellness I doubt it would do them much good. I wish I would have thought of that when transitioning the purina the breeder gave me quite a bit when I only needed a cup. Will definently keep that in mind though. Thanks |

| I just wanted to thank everyone for their help & making me feel so welcome here! I will definitely be slowly transitioning him over to a better food once I feel as though he is comfortable & settled in his new home. |

| On thing that is also important is not just look at the ingredients but the company who makes them too. I had Callie on Wellness core and it worked great for her but when they had there third recall I just could not keep her on wellness anymore. So research the company not just the ingredients.
