Vaccines Ok I know I am one of those crazy puppy mommies. With that said. . I would like to know what kind of Vaccines everyone is giving their pups. I am in the Northeast. I am going to train Galen to go potty outside. Is anyone also giving Lyme ? I do not want to over vaccinate him. In a perfect world I would not want to give him nothing but that is not an option. |
I live in NJ, i have a double fence yard and i thought my dogs did not need the lyme vaccine, well that is until i found a tick on My son's little jack Russell rescue, i panicked, removed it and call the vet. since then my dogs have been getting the lyme vaccine, I also titer for the other vaccines, the only vaccine they get faithfully every 3 years is rabies and that is because is the law here in my state, I do have a lot of deer running around, so even with a double fence I got a tick in the yard. so you have to consider all that to protect your babies. hugs, |
Callie gets lyme because she is a tick magnet for the small tiny ticks and lyme is painful for them to have. Callie also gets Lepto because my mom had a goat die of it and Callie goes over to my moms sometimes. She also gets bordatella because I like taking her to lots of places and kennel cough is not fun and can last a long time. Its important to know what is in your area. |
Whatever our vet sug. is what we give normally. We are in a the outskirts of town where wild animals are present so we always give Lepto also. Leptospirosis... A bacterial infection affecting thekidneys. This class of bacteria can infect humans, cows, dogs, pigs and othermammals. Carried by racoons, rats & skunks spread through urine. |
Is there a certain age they have to be for the lyme and lepto shot to reduce the chance of a reaction? Verbena, do you keep Galen inside all the time? I think im going to feel bad keeping him couped up inside. I was thinking about getting a stroller so he can get some air and not touch the ground. |
At the moment Galen is just 14 weeks today. As a worry Biewer mom I will not bring him anywhere or outside until 2 weeks after all his shots are given. I am so worried about reactions. I would love to not give him any but that is unrealistic. He is a pet. I want him to go out, play with others, and see the world ( maybe just his little part of the world) |
WHEN TO VACINATE 6 to 7 weeks of age: First combination vaccine. (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus,Parainfluenza, Coronavirus) 9 weeks of age: Second combination vaccine. 12 weeks of age: Third combination injection and possibly a LYMEVaccine inoculation. Generally a LYME vaccine is then repeated two weeks later,then once a year. 16 weeks of age: Last combination vaccine. 12 to 16 weeks of age: Rabies vaccine is given. (Local and Statelaws apply regarding Rabies vaccine since this can be a human disease, too.Your veterinarian will tell you the proper time intervals for booster vaccinesfor Rabies.) I believe they need to be older than 16 wks for the LEpto . |
I am going to give him only one shot at a time. I am so worried about my little one. It is amazing though. When my Kitties were little kittens they got all their shots with no worries. Dogs are so different |

I tend to follow Dr Dodds' vaccine protocol, and Dr Shultz (see articles in the YT Library). I don't vaccinate for Lymes bc it is treatable. Once vaccinated for Lymes, the dog will test positive for it. Lymes is a bacterial disease, and needs to be given every 6-8 months to be effective, and there are a ton of questions regarding it's effectiveness. About Lepto: Leptospirosis in Dogs How They Catch It, How We Cure It, How We Prevent It I just say no to the dental vaccine, Giardia vaccine, dog flu vaccine, and any 'new' vaccine that comes on the market. I wait a full month inbetween vaccines. The dog will develope a better vaccine response doing it this way. Corona affects puppies less than 8 weeks of age. I don't get that one either, as all mine are older. If you choose to get the Kennel Cough (Bordetella) vaccine, the injection is better than the intranasal, which can cause other problems. DHPP as a pup, then a year after, then every 3 years (if at all after year one). Lepto (only in the dog that hasn't almost died from this vaccine and only bc it is a major problem in Michigan). Rabies per the law. The thing about moncore vaccines is that they have to be given annuallu, besides the fact that some are altogether unnecessary. You absolutely do NOT need to give giardia or corona. Lyme/lepto/bordetella are based on area and lifestyle. For me personally I'd never be giving all three. Pick the one(s) that are most necessary. My dogs do not have cardiopulmonary issues. They do not get bordetella. We don't board and, as long as an owner is payingattention, pneumonia secondary to kennel cough is not common. I don't like the lyme vaccine and it is usually unnecessary. Is your closest vet school giving it? Same goes for lepto although I think it has its place. It is not necessary in most areas and the vaccine does cause reactions...quite a bit. |
Out of all the vaccines, I am most steadfast on the Parvo Vaccination. |
