| Great life and free dried raw food question Has any one heard of Great life dog food? Got a sample of it and the pieces are Callie sized lol. Also is it ok to feed dry dog food and freeze dried raw food at the same time?

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Yeah, I think it's a myth that you can't feed raw and processed food at the same time. Some people have said that there are different digestion rates and others buy this concept and pass it on, it sounds like a lot of hooey to me. Humans eat raw and processed together all the time. Can any of these people show any scientific proof why this shouldn’t be done?

| Have never heard of Great life. But I have mixed raw and kibble together countless times and never had an issue. I'd be interested in a mini-review of Great Life and how Callie likes her samples |

Raw Meat Diets For My Pet Some folks recommend that high-carb petfoods and raw food not be mixed in a single meal because gastric acidity on a high-carb diet is not sufficient. They are right about carbohydrates lessening gastric acidity. (ref) Whether raw meat is more efficient than cooked meat in doing that is unknown. That same problem might occur if natural bones were given to pets on a high carbohydrate diet - stomach acids efficiently disolve sharp bone fragments.

| I tried feeding Great Life to my pups a few months ago. They're picky & they didn't like it. But...the reason I was drawn to Great Life (aside from being coated with freeze-dried raw probiotic stuff) was that they didn't use protein fillers like pea protein. All of the protien in their kibble comes from meat. I was also concerned with allergies at the time & was curious to see if the tapioca and jicama ingredients would work for my pups. That being said, I don't really know if it's "okay" to feed kibble & freeze-dried raw in the same meal. I feed mine Primal freeze dried twice a day & put out a bowl of Earthborn Holistic from about 11-4. Sometimes I sprinkle a little Primal (not rehydrated) on the kibble. They haven't had any health issues.

An analogy I use is a sushi roll. It contains raw, cooked, fresh veg etc - our tummies can digest all of that just fine. A dog's tummy is way more acidic than ours so for them, it's theoretically even more able to break things down efficiently.

I don't see how the study cited supports the statement, “Some folks recommend that high-carb pet foods and raw food not be mixed in a single meal because gastric acidity on a high-carb diet is not sufficient. They are right about carbohydrates lessening gastric acidity.” From my understanding, the study found the exact opposite. In the summary it says that the study found that the acidity of the gastric contents remained low for a longer time after the meal containing the higher protein content. Furthermore, even if it found that the carbs lowered gastric acidity, the study is about protein vs. carbohydrates and the acidity they produce, it doesn't talk of raw meat protein vs. cooked meat protein, it even talks about the protein in carbs relating to acid.

| Thanks guys. The great life sounded really good and she seems to like it and she can be pretty picky. She also really likes the Stella and Chewy's freeze dried raw a lot.

I used to sprinkle freeze dried raw over their kibble & they all loved it & had no issues. When I was transitioning Mimi & Turbo over to premade raw, I added some raw over their kibble & they were fine then too. When they were completely on raw, I noticed that they were burping a lot more than usual & it was stinky. Though that was weird, it lasted a couple of days & stopped. That's great that Callie likes it!

| In the morning, mine get Nature's Variety raw, and in the evening they get Nature's Variety Instinct with raw boost. It is kibble mixed with pieces of freeze dried raw. (I don't mix it, it comes that way). My dogs love it and they do very well on it. Introducing Instinct Raw Boost - Kibble with a Boost of Raw | Nature's Variety

Those studies are hard to read, it was weird though, because the original article says, Quote:
