Itching/ Scratching Hi. My little girl Daisy is almost four months old. I'v had her for about a month and a hlf. She itches and scratches a lot. She went to the vet a few days ago and he said she has no fleas or allergies. Any suggestions? thanks.

I took Luca to the vet last week. I had been using flea medicine, so I knew it wasn't fleas. Anyway - they gave him a shot of cortisone and some antihistimine pills for allergies - cleared him right up!!! And he was scratching ALLLL the time. The shot did the trick within a few hours. You can give them pills as needed but no more than 3 a day, so I give him one like every other day, just so he doesn't start back up again. How did the vet know it wasn't allergies??? I have never tried this, but my neighbor said the vet told him to use Kids Liquid Benedryl. He uses it all the time and has had his dogs for 9+ years. I don't know details on this, so you might want to call the vet first. It's worth a try. It is much cheaper than going to the vet everytime.

No - he did not do any tests. I described his issues, he checked his skin for fleas/mites to rule that out and said it had to be allergies. He was scratching alot - he sratched above his eye so hard one time that it started bleeding a little. He was also chewing his paws, which is apparently common with allergies, according to the vet. I kept telling myself the same thing...yorkies have skin problems, he'll be ok....but Luca started looking really pitiful scratching all the time, so I took him. It is such a relief to have that taken care of now. Luca looks much happier. Did Daisy have allergy tests done?

Just because your dog doesn't have fleas doesn't mean it isn't itching because of fleas. Think about it. If you got bitten by and ant or a mosquito you will probably itch long after the ant or mosquito is gone. Same with dog. If they bitten by a flea they may itch long after the flea is gone. I have a dog that is extremely allergic to flea bites and as soon as she get bitten she scratch for days. Usually 0.5cc of benedryl clears it up( she is 7lbs). Or you can do what adkins32 did and take her to the vet for a corisone shot or antihistine pills.

yorkieagility - I am glad to here someone else say they use the benedryl. I was afraid to try it myself. (without calling the vet first) I had already taken luca to the vet when I heard about the benedryl. thanks for the reassurance.

Benedryl? Won't Benedryl make them sleepy? My Chewie has allergies and chews her feet, scratches her ears, etc. My Vet gave me some allergy pills for her but they made her too sleepy, and I didn't want that. Plus, I didn't want to keep her on it all of the time. Let me know how the Benedryl works. Thanks.

On time, my Punkin somehow stepped on a bee and was licking her front paw for a really long time. I thought it was allergies or something until I found the remaining dead bee in the house. I examined her paw and saw the stinger stuck between the palm so her licking couldn't get it out. I had to use a tweezer to pull out the stringer and gave her a little benedryl to relieve the itch. Kathleenann: Does Diasy go outside? Does she step on grass or dirt? Try washing her paws with gentle puppy shampoo. Another thing you can try is feeding her different food. Maybe the current dog food has something that irriratate the skin making her itch and scratch. I switch from Iams to Eukanuba and it works well for my dogs from itching.

| Yes Rickzero, she does go outside. She loves to run around. I have her on Science Diet small bites which is what the breeder told me to feed her. I'm going to try the oatmeal shampoo and maybe benedryl and see if that changes anything. I'll let you know.

Itching problem My shagger was scratching a lot also and then I switched his food to rice and lamb instead of chicken, which has seemed to help. I also use the oatmeal shampoo and that works great on the type of skin and hair Yorkies have. But I now have the problem of him scratching his head until it bleeds and then it scabs over and then it starts all over again. I dont know why he is just digging his head and no where else? And when it gets a scab on it thats when he starts to dig again, I guess because it is healing. Does anyone know why he is doing this? Shaggers Mom

| Your pup may also have mange of some type. My vet diagnosed it right away and confirmed it by touching his ear tip with her finger... his leg went crazy trying to scratch it.
